No Animated GIFs What's the point of an avatar?

I've only had two avatars in 10+ years.

Both have featured John Belushi.

The first one was from the Blues Brothers Era.

The present one is a plainer, simpler Belushi.

As I resemble him somewhat, that's why I chose him.

Sometimes it's fun to see how a different avatar can change the tone of both your own posts and others's responses to you.

Avatars mean a lot of things - the impersonation of their character/personality, things they like, or just random things they consider cool. At least I like to think of my avatar expressing these things, whether you get it or not.

Besides, I get bored with one picture for too long a time, so I just switch it regularly every 500 posts.

I have two avatars that I switch between occasionally.

The first is Lonely Soul at Night by Liquicity. I feel that it captures my contemplative side, as well as my love for liquid music and solitude.

My current avatar is a self-pic I took last year. While I was away, so many of my close friends from JUB decided to self-delete or have stopped posting actively. Upon returning, I found myself feeling a little bit like the guy at the party standing in the corner by himself. I don't really share pictures of myself on JUB the way many of the regular posters do, but I figured this avatar might humanise me just a little bit to those who don't know me and encourage them to interact.

Personal tangents aside, an avatar doesn't have to be an identifier or an image reflective of one's inner self. There's nothing wrong with somebody putting up a different hot guy every day or a random picture they find to be aesthetically pleasing. There are still many ways for them to be identified outside of having a 'signature avatar' (their username, their personality, their writing style).

I imagine that the reason some people change their avatar daily is because they want to. Good enough for me.

It looks like one of those casts at Pompeii.

It's always made me think of a Han Solo in carbonite getting a bj through a glory hole.

I get bored so I switch out an avatar to change things up. And well...because I can. (!)

:? I wonder if I should change mine? Both of them.

People here seem casual about it yet they were catatonic about Enchanted, Boston etc.

While I enjoy the creativity and variety of the changing avatars, the unchanging ones are so much easier for identifying people quickly.

I've had only about 5 since I joined, and the newest is here only because of Lefty's passing. I'm not sure how long I'll leave that one up, but I'll probably restore the one Chaz and I made soon. I make all of my avatars and signatures, usually from a photo I've taken, so they tend to show something about me.

I'm glad that posters change their avatars. The more often, the better. It can be a good indicator of their interests or mood of the moment. I get mighty tired of looking at the same ass pic or cock pic on someone's avatar year after year.

I really don't mind people changing them.

But mine is staying as it is; you are stuck with it until I dry up and blow away.

You're forgetting Elvin. He used to change his avatar several times a day, and always a picture of himself.

Not only that, but he also had a sig pic of himself that he also changed daily, incase we missed the avatar pic of himself.

Maybe I should use a picture of myself in both my avatar and sig so elvin won't be the only one that's done it, so you can collectively get off the long gone mans' nuts.

I think they are OK as long as you change them once in a while. I put my rainbow one on for Pride Week but will go to something else after. What I don't understand is why people have the same one 6 years later? Gets old and in the past I just blocked the most irritating ones. The avatar is to enhance your personal expression/profile or make a visual about something that reflect you currently(status, opinion, preference etc). But to each his own. Some don't use any and that's OK!
