Where I worked long ago, my female co-workers were crazy for appetizers. The entree could be a steaming bowl of poo, but if there were stuffed mushrooms, mozzarella sticks, and mini crab quiche that would be fine with them

Depends. In an English restaurant, I'll generally go for something like pate (often tarted up by being called parfait or whatever). In an Indian restaurant I regularly order lamb puri and in a Chinese restaurant it absolutely has to be crispy duck pancakes.
