I love architecture. The fact that these buildings grew from scratches on paper to a massive structure really appeals to me.

I specifically like brutalist:

for its starkness and hypermasculine beauty.

Victorian:

for its charm, ornateness and refinement.

And Art Deco:

mainly because of the time period, I love the 40s.

What about you guys?

Great thread, Dante.

I have not ever thought to choose a favorite among the arts. Many things that are properly crafts are now deemed arts by those who use the term indiscriminately. However, as much as I love cooking, I will never consider it an art. It is a skill that is often inspired by genius, but it remains a craft.

My first inclination is photography due to the control of perspective and the use of the palette. The control of lighting is also impressive. But ultimately, I believe sculpture captivates me most. It seems impossible to those of us without the muse to see a sculpture within a medium, much less to summon it.

Some favorites:

Auguste Rodin's The Burghers of Calais from his The Gates of Hell:

The head of Liberty Enlightening the World, in Paris 1878, by Auguste Bartholdi:

Michelangelo Buonarroti's Pieta, in the Vatican, after restoration:

Music. From orchestra to what you hear on the radio. I could sit around all day and listen to music. Vocals not even required.

If that doesn't count then photography. Photos of nature and architecture.

All of it. I couldn't imagine a day without the beauty of art and look at paintings, sculpture, photography, drawings, architecture throughout the day.

I love realism and abstraction. I love art that makes people angry and art that calms the soul.

I love theatre and music and poetry.

I love the simple crafts that are not even mindful of being art.

I like pretty much any form of art but I love carved wood more than anything else. I have an African Story Board from Mali that is a couple hundred+ years old...I never get tired of looking at it.

I love Art Deco Design...love the lines...

Both the Art Deco and Memphis Design inspire me ...I like the vibe...

I love ancient Greek and Roman statuary

This jumped out at me. I absolutely love anything that makes you feel strong emotion. My first impression of Brutalist/New Brutalist architecture was, "My GOD, is that ever ugly!" Similar, but different, with surrealism; I didn't get it for a while. But it's that emotional (and often also intellectual) response that really makes art art.

Also, eastofeden, I absolutely LOVE the Memphis Modern-style stuff! It's so Art Deco. If I had a ton of money I think that's how I'd decorate my house. Thanks for posting those pics!

I love all forms of art but esp. nude art: paintings, drawings, sketches, sculpture, photographs.

I love three dimensional art, whether it is perspective or actually three dimensional. I didn't think of architectures as art, but I also love architecture and that makes sense because it is three dimensional. I love art where the longer you look at it the more you find that you didn't originally see.

Me too...and the Memphis which is mostly from the 1980s compliments the Deco stuff very nicely. I could fill pages of pictures of the stuff I love....

I have some pieces...my friend in New York specializes in it and she gets some cool stuff. She turned me on the the Memphis Design magazine years ago which I loved looking at.

The whole vibe..the colors and shape and the funky abstract design turn me on a lot....

Maybe 10 years ago in Sacramento I was at an antique show and there was this cool wall mounted coat and hat rack that had different colorful and geometric shapes and while I was contemplating buying it...this other guy came up and grabbed it when I was distracted and bought it for 25.00...

...then I saw it in her magazine...worth thousands of dollars..from a famous designer. Oh well....I would have wanted it even if it was worth 10 bucks...
