  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

What's your favourite wine?

Bordeaux, Bordeaux, Bordeaux, Bordeaux, I hope my message is big enough now.

it differs. i don't buy much wine - especially since hardly anybody around me drinks wine. so i try something new almost every time.

however .. i have bought this one a few times, because i liked it:

I had Malbec and I thought it was pretty good. It was brought over by a friend from Buenos Aires. :-)

I know nothing about wine but he told me that you would never look bad bringing a Malbec bottle with you.

And he's quite right. Here in Argentina we've been having great quality malbecs, and there's a hell of a lot of competition between wineries so even the less expensive ones are actually quite good. I use malbec a lot for cooking. Most foreigners who appreciate wines get surprised at how cheap and good wine is here.

I personally like cabernet a lot and I don't really mind investing a bit more to get the quality I want, as local cabernets are not nearly as good as local malbecs.

These weeks I'm having the tannat varietal from Quara which is an awesome wine for its prize and seems to point that some good tannat is growing in our lands. Tannat is a more obscure grape and its wine has a touch of thickness that makes it not only great for sharing but also for cooking, Quite happy with it althought I'm not as fond of eating with it.

And the art of the sommelier is FAR outside my realm of expertise, though I admire their skill and knowledge.

Not quite far, mate. Once you start having wine regularly you'll start comparing and analyzing yourself, not as artfully of course, but enough to have fun when trying wines.

For two years or more I've been wanting to try a Tannat. Very rare in the US. Does it bear resemblance to any other wines you know?

I thought I wouldn't find it, and voilà:

this is not wine, this is one step further Heaven's doors.
Not too exclusive, not expensive. RIOJA "Gonzalo de Berceo".
This is one of the softest sensations I ever had in my mouth, and I got some.

I like a good malbec and on special occassions amarone.

However some lessor known but very beautiful grapes/wines are salice salentino, Negroamaro and Primitivo. All Italian varieties and inexpensive.

Not quite alike other wines but I can compare it with Syrah. It probably shares with Syrah that they both are quite succulent wines but Tannat is quite thicker, "inkier" and more intense and I feel it lacks versatility in the table cause it's presence is more overwhelming. I tried it for cooking as a sauce base and it works really well specially because for its intensity you don't need to use as much of it like you'd do with malbec. The extra glasses come quite handy too :)

Best bottle of wine I ever drank was a 05 Yellow Tale Merlot. Went great with pepperoni pizza and chocolate chocolate chip ice cream.

Same here really.

I buy at lot of Beaujolais Villages. At the moment I'm drinking Domaine des Nugues.

For white, I prefer a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Lawson's Dry Hills and Villa Maria are both good.

All three can be had from Majestic.

Louis Jadot makes a decent (and very cheap) Beaujolais Villages.
