What's your opinion of piercing a baby's ears?

I don't think I would get a baby's ears pierced...

But the rationalist in me can't help but draw a parallel between doing this and circumcision, in that it's a modification of the child's body without their permission.

Piercings can heal if earrings are left out for long enough but circumcision is permanent damage. I'd have been much better off with pierced ears than being butchered by that quack when I was born. My ears would have healed so they were like new. My dick will never be right.
As far as I care circumcision is the ultimate child abuse and should have been banned a century ago.

In my family it was tradition to pierce the ears of newborn baby girls, but even in my lifetime they'd more or less stopped.

Not necessarily. I haven't wore an earring for nearly 10 yrs., and my piercings are still there.

I was once at my optometrist, that is located next to a piercing place, waiting for an exam. A baby was screaming blood murder next door. All the ladies in the office got mad and said every day someone would bring a baby in and it would scream like that. After their experience with it they all thought it should be outlawed as child abuse.

I'm against making any body modifications to a child. If they want that done once they're able to make that decision for themselves, then they can.

That includes circumcision.

I'd wait until they were older, preferably in their teens. But, my mother got my sister's ears pierced when she was an infant and it didn't cause any issues. I saw a tiny baby at the store a few nights ago with diamond earrings, and her nails and toenails painted!
