Next week, a Siberian cold wave is expected.

Does Siberian air travel pin that direction? On our continent, it would NEVER travel like that - i.e. that would be like cold Labrador air TRAVELING WESTWARD to Colorado, Just not gonna happen.

Yep. Every year. In February. Well, maybe expect a couple of times in the past couple of years, when we didn't have any winter whatsoever AT ALL.
Meteorologists say it's a Siberian wave all right, not an Arctic one. In fact, it's bound to sweep the whole of Europe, reaching as far as the Mid-Atlantic but it is expected to be more severe in the Eastern part of the continent.

In the meantime, sunshine-sunshine, now 45ºF. I'm not sure we're having yesterday's springtime again.


But what you are confirming is that air does travel Westward. Obviously, going westward from Siberian, even if you are closer in Colorado, it won't reach you if it has to literally go around the world.

As for my Colorado example, I'm not talking about a Siberian air mass (and we HAVE gotten those before, coming directly over the North Pole - brutal!!), but thinking more of, let's say, Greenland or Labrador - the same weather that crosses those areas will NEVER travel southwest all the way to Colorado. Possibly weather that has traveled over a place like Winnipeg might make it to Colorado, but even that is RARE - weather in the United States just doesn't tend to travel to the southwest.

Apparently that travel direction is much more common in Eurasia (I think of Siberia as the Asiatic part of Russia, east of the Urals), because I also remember Scandinavia being affected by the Chernobyl disaster, and I thought THAT was strange.

Siberia to Spain is definitely a distance similar to Greenland/Labrador to Colorado, as well as a similar direction.

If weather here doesn't travel to the southwest, it's even more rare for weather to move toward the northwest.

We got about 5-6 inches of snow last night. The forecast is for another 8-12 inches Saturday night. We'll be cross country skiing and snowmobiling this weekend, so it's all good.

Well, eight years ago Barcelona reached 104ºF in August, when anything above 86ºF is extreme heat (Barcelona summer is defined by constant lows above 70ºF, not by extreme heights): that was due to inland masses of dry air that NEVER reach the coast... like having Arizona weather in San Francisco (although Barcelona is more LA, but you get the point).

The flow of air masses may be regular, but not to the extent of being fixed like, say, the magnetic poles or something like that.

What could be found strange is the degree of pollution, but not the fact that Scandinavia felt it. Inland Barcelona, a couple of hundreds north away from the city, receives the pollution of the metro area like the southwestern coastal area of that conurbation, with the only difference of the degree. What's so suprising about it? You can legitimately be pissed, but not surprised.

It started to rain this late afternoon: it was horrible to see a middle-aged couple sitting under the rain, and those guys lying on their matrasses at a main junction of the Passeig de Gràcia, and some other chamfer in the same "posher" neighborhood ".
