The sun is back finally!
We just had three days of dampness. It never rained; we were just in the clouds -- or rather the clouds weren't up above, they were crawling along on the ground, making everything damp. And along the coast mountains where clouds would be expected to climb and go over, shedding rain on their way, they didn't -- oh, they started to climb, but as the tops rose above five hundred feet or so they just faded into nothingness, vanishing as the warmer air absorbed the moisture.
It wasn't like ground fog; that swirls around moving objects. It was exactly like when I've been driving or biking or hiking and climbed up into clouds that clung to a mountainside. The edges, looking back after driving through and above it, weren't like fog, either; with fog the edges just get thinner until it fades away, but this had a clear boundary with cloud on one side and clear air on the other. Visibility was maybe two soccer fields long, so it wasn't all that thick, just thick enough that walking briskly through it resulted in damp clothes and moisture running down exposed skin -- and that up front; clothes on the back stayed dry.
I camped in weather like that once with the difference being about 20° F -- this was maybe 64°; when I camped in it the temperature was about 85° F. But either situation was weird.

The expected high here for the next six days: 68° F, 68° F, 68° F, 68° F, 68° F, 68° F.
Meanwhile, the expected high twenty miles from here by highway (8.2 miles as the crow flies: 70°, 82°, 87°, 93°, 96°, 99°.
Time to find a swimming hole!
Hey, I know this one -- it's listed in the "Top 30" in Oregon but I know five spots within five miles either direction from this one that are actually better (just a bit tougher to get to)--

Hard to tell: overcast, hazily sunny, sunny, hazily sunny... First day of the heatwave, somewhat warmer, air smells again more of hot summer... no big deal so far, but the alarms are sounding like crazy in all the media.

Well, today, unlike yesterday, you can believe there is a heatwave brewing and starting to boil out there, because it has been solidly bright and sunny right from dawn. However, in the BCN metro area, the temperatures are expected to be just like they have been in July, before the typical early August bump: 86, 88, 90ºF/30,31,32ºC by day, 24ºC/75ºF to 26ºC/79ºF by night, with around 94ºF/34ºC by day,28ºC/83ºF at night at the peak of the wave.

It does feel different compared to the past few days but, again, in BCN it feels just like normal summer, more back to the past month than ahead to where thermometer mercury had never expanded before.
