Without drugs or alcohol, what is the best way to decompress.

I take a deep breath, count backwards from 100, and keep reassuring myself that whatever it is I'm miffed about will not bring about the end of days.

Then afterwards, I play some Sade on the iPod, turn off all the lights in my room, get in bed and try my damndest to go to sleep.

This method works about 99.9% of the time for me. Three hours later, I'm calmer and more refreshed, and the craziness that I was stressing about usually seem so small to me when it's all said and done.

That sound like a great idea.

usually i talk to alot of my friends about my problem hoping that whatever it is that im stressing about will fade. If that ever fails then I eat ice cream. But only one of 3 flavors. Either Cherry, Pistachio (if i spelt it right), or Chocolate. :D

During the day, I work in the yard... there's just something about pulling weeds and swearing up a storm that makes me feel better!

Seriously... music seems to work for me. That and some time alone to sort out my thoughts.

I get out either the sledge hammer or the big steel pipe and smash the extra junk lying around the shop at work. And if that doesn't do it, I get out the log splitter and crush things into oblivion.

That depends. If I'm stressed about something specific, something that's solvable or fixable, I'll usually try to tackle it immediately. I can't sleep or relax w/ that sort of thing hanging over my head, so it's better to jump in and see what can be done.

If I'm just generally stressed b/c I'm rehashing work, or my fams got me going, or anything else that really can't be fixed, I usually try to expand the excess energy. Sex works like a charm. At least for a while. Talking about the problem helps me too, but I'm extroverted and I problem solve by discussing things. Running definitely knocks out some excess energy and it's even better when I do it outside. The cute animals, flowers, and fresh air seem to help. Debating, arguing, whatever you wish to call it also helps. Yeah, verbal sparring is wonderful stress relief for me. Walking Sadie is also a big plus. She just seems so grateful to be around me, and she's so happy to do anything w/ us. She's therapeutic, maybe it's her tail which wags 90 miles an hour when she's happy.

I hope you find something that works for you. There are some amazing tips here. I believe I'll try destroying an item next time I'm stressed. There's some old sheet rock somewhere around here.

Odd enough, I spend money. Not always, necessarily, a lot of money (though I have spent a great deal a few times) Economically speaking, I don't do it as often as I used to, however:

I don't splurge a lot on myself and save most of the money I make - mostly spend it on others lol but if I really get in a rut, there's something about.. Just getting up one day, look at my finances and run from here to there, buying stuff. Might be something I need or have been in need of, maybe not.

The last time I reallt went crazy with spending, was a few years ago. I bought the most complete entertainment center, my money could buy. It just about broke me lol

Since then, realizing how silly that really was, because I didn't really need any of it, I've "slowed my roll" lol and am a little more practical

This is so easy to answer.

There is this island of tranquility in my life called HOME.

2. Sleeping
3. Masturbating xD
4. Reading Harry Potter (lolz)

I did the same thing about 20 years ago. I still have the speakers, and will never replace them, they sound great. Think of it as an investment you will have for the rest of your life.

As for how I deal with stress, I work more. I keep myself busy and try not to let little things bug me.

Hot bath.
Followed by cold drink (usually soda), a good book, and good company.

I made a thread about this a little while ago. Still trying to figure it out. I suffer from city-life stress and student stress. I almost always feel anxious and am worrying about something, I can never seem to make my mind SHUT UP. I can never turn it off. It's a positive thing sometimes, but not when I'm trying to relax or get to sleep, like now. I've decided I'm going to start doing yoga classes next week. I'm thinking of smoking pot again, but I'm worried about that (see, worrying) because I don't want it to become a habit.

Other than trying yoga, I can't really think of much. I'd like to get to the root of the problem. I definitely take in too much caffeine. A lot of the suggestions really aren't applicable to students. For example, I can't lay in bed and meditate, or whatever, because my bed is small and uncomfortable and I can't afford a new one yet. I can't take a hot bath, because I live in a shared apartment, and the bath tub is gross and no one wants to take up that much time in the rest room. I can't zone out and watch TV because we don't have cable - and when I try doing it on my computer, it's counter productive because I'm still in front of my computer, which is part of my life being so "plugged in" to the world.

I can't read a good book, because I associate that with stress because I read for school.

I think I'm going to start taking more advantage of the more natural parts of the city - going to the parks and stuff. Having picnics with friends and drinking wine. Maybe going to the cinema more, during the day. I'm also going to re-read "The Tao of Pooh" and try to learn how to relax and turn my mind off.

Oh, and I forgot, chilling out at a cafe seems to help too. And sex, but I have sex almost every day so I'm used to that period of total relaxation, almost like a high, but then it's make to being tense.
