When We Rise

Looks good, i'll make sure to track it down.

Just as a point of interest, as it was filmed here in Vancouver, I was an extra in several different scenes during the course of the shoot. Met a number of great people, and the crew was also great to work with.

I really love our resident alt right gays, equating racist and ethnic and cultural insults with free speech. I'm a huge believer in the first amendment, and oppose most kinds of censorship that unfortunately many on the left do support. Instead, I believe you shine light calling out those with reprehensible opinions and philosophies. And unfortunately that kind of right wing "shock" speech is heard all too much, here and in other forums. Enough about the haters and negative nasties.

Yeah, there's a risk it can come off schmaltzy. But I appreciate those who wouldn't take it any more and started the fight for full equality for the LGBT community, and wish I had that kind of inner strength when I was younger. Fuck that, even today.

I wonder when we're gonna get more positive gay movies... movies that focus on the negative aspects are a dime a dozen.

Gay rights have come a LOOONG way, in a surprisingly short amount of time; even in the past 15 years, we've gone from being hard pressed to find someone who isn't homophobic, to being hard pressed to find someone that is (and it's always due to religious reasons.) Positive movies that reflect that would be very nice. Plus, it'll be nice for people who are closeted, or just coming out to see that things are better than what they've been led to believe.

Then again, I don't have a victim complex, so what do I know.

Hopefully it won't be another "Stonewall"...yeesh, Roland Emmerich really got that one fucked up! There's no reason why we can't do both... positive oriented movies and those that deal with our struggle for equality. And I think the overarching theme of "When We Rise" IS positive. It's been a long struggle, and not until very recently have things gone in the way of equality.... Don't Ask, Don't Tell is only a few years ended and it took a divided Supreme Court to deem marriage equality law of the entire land and not in just a patchwork of liberal states. It's nowhere near wonderful yet in many ways... racial, ethnic and cultural disparities exist even with the positive news and many on the right still want to pull back the progress made in new guises as "protecting religious liberty".

"When We Rise"

"When We Rise" starts its run tonight for those interested on ABC.

It is about the GLBT movement.

Re: "When We Rise"

I'm a big Cleve Jones fan, as he started the AIDS quilt and is a great activist. So, I found his backstory interesting. Overall the first 2 hours were excellent. Good to see strong gay characters on prime time network TV. I'll be definitely be watching the next three parts.

Re: "When We Rise"

Good powerful story as well as sexy actors. It's a story I wasn't very familiar with and needed to see.

Re: "When We Rise"

Great first part. All of the “young” actors are amazing. On top of that Austin P. McKenzie is gorgeous.

The only issues I have right now are the known actors is not working for me and the ending showing the next installments showed too much.

Re: "When We Rise"

It was interesting. Having lived there during some of those days, it was nice to see The Castro Theatre. I also liked that they did not shy away from the racism in the gay community back then, something that continued well into the 90s. I wonder if they'll cover the period when the first dyke bar appeared at the corner of Collingwood and 18th Streets. The gay men did not like that AT ALL. I haven't seen how far the movie extends into the future, but I'd like to see that, since the lesbian's comments in the first episode that they were tired of helping gay men when it seemed that gay men rarely get past their groins. That was right on target and certainly was the case after 1974, when the gay community and the police department reached a detente and the raids stopped. Once they knew the police weren't going to arrest and assault you with their batons, it seemed a large portion of the gay male community took that for free license to have sex anywhere they wanted, and that was when the gay community exploded into public view and the Folsom turned into THE leather neighborhood in San Francisco. And yet, when the first lesbian bar appeared around 1984 at the corner of Collingwood and 18th streets, the gay macho culture's dislike for lesbians in 'their' neighborhood was unmistakeable. Boystown had been breached. It would be good to see ALL the history, and Cleve was certainly aware of that, since he lived in the Castro.

I'm expecting a single trans woman to represent th 't' portion while the rest of us go fuck ourselves. Do they have a list of the names of the characters in the film?

Now that more trans people are appearing in TV shows and movies, your only thought is to complain that there aren't more?
I guess some people are never satisfied.

I wouldn't mind seeing more gay men who aren't one dimensional stereotypes, but I'm just glad that there are any at all, and that they're at least presented in a positive light... and I'm just glad that we've reached the point where you can make gay themed TV shows and movies without causing a massive uproar... then again, that's just me.
