We've stayed in hotel rooms costing $1500 per night and some costing $15 per night.

Don't think I slept better in one than the other.

As we get older, we like quiet, smaller hotels with charm, grace and less corporate feel.

I always stay in mid-range motels, every now and again a hotel, but I don't choose them... these are always the choice of the people with whom I travel. I've never traveled alone in my life. And everybody in my life is a mid-range kind of person. Crazy expensive has no place, but super cheap is not to be trusted, either.

If I were going to choose, I'd just pick whatever was the cheapest and offered the necessaries that others have already mentioned: bed bigger than a twin, a bathroom, a door that locks properly, and nobody in the room I don't know. WiFi is cool, too, and a TV never hurts, plus restaurants onsite or in walking distance are nice. If I was on a road trip, it would be the first place that caught my eye when I got tired; if I was planning in advance, I'd just...

Wait, I never plan in advance. That's why I never get to choose the accommodations.

Well Hilton may not be your idea of 5 Star that's true...

I have stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton. It is a good place to go to when you are planning on going to the LV Convention Center. It was quiet. Hilton is not typically known as being a 5 star hotel. I don't need a luxury room, not that it isn't nice to have. But I need quiet.

Ritz Carlton, Langham, and Bellagio are 5 star hotels.

i only stay at the most luxurious hotels and resorts... reserved for the rich, famous, and beautiful.

if i'm not paying 1000 dollars a night, its not worth it.

I've had incredibly bad experiences at 'good' hotels and very good experiences at so-called 'one star' places.

One time I was traveling in a very remote part of Nebraska and just had to stop for the night otherwise I was going to fall asleep. It wasn't too late but I'd been driving for 15 hours already and was done. Pulled into a 'Ma and Pa' type place and got a room. Went to my room and had just opened the door and the Pa came up and asked me if everything was OK (it was just dandy) but then he invited me to dinner with the Missus, they had plenty and anyway I was the only guest for the night. Burgers on the grill, fresh Nebraska corn and Iced Tea. Blueberry Pie for dessert. And they INSISTED I not pay. Room, $38.00, home cooked dinner FREE, whole stay, fantastic. I left a $20 tip in the room.

I failed to mention the bed was VERY comfortable, the room was Grandma-clean and very nice sized, the shower had plenty of pressure and the towels were better than at most 3-star Hotels. And there was a bottle of Windex and a roll of paper towels underneath the sink with a hand-written sticker on it, saying 'Please use the paper towels to clean your windshield. Thank You.'

If it's a tropical place, and I will hardly be in the room, it's irrelevant.

In the US, I use Hotwire.com to get the best deal on better hotels.

Whatever my company can afford! Usually 4 1/2 star places - not the most violently upmarket, but quite pleasant enough. Generally I'm only in them to sleep anyway, so as long as the room is quiet and comfortable I don't really mind. If I'm paying myself, then I go downmarket!

I seem to remember western nebraska - cozad...ahaaa NO ONE here has been there. If you have been there - we need to talk.

I believe I have filled my gas tank there on some occasion.

I've spent the night in Gothenburg just up I-80.

I'd be willing to bet Swerve and Google have passed the exit more times than they are willing to count.

Can't afford hotels. Long ago we used to get nights offered for the family so we took a holiday to spend time together.

The hotels here are too expensive for local people. Think about $400-500 a night per person for a 4 star hotel.

If I had to travel I'd choose any budget but clean room.

I'm a big fan of Microtels when I am paying...They are all new build (generally all constructed within last 15 years) and very reasonable. The average price is like $50. For work, I like Hilton Garden Inns and Fairfield Inns.
