Where does Don McLean's "American Pie" rank in all-time best Pop songs ?

Personally it is in my top 25........don't know about a real rating.

It doesn't even rate. I like the song a lot, but one of the main qualities of pop is brevity. A seven-minute opus is the very antithesis of "pop".

The original single was just American Pie Part 1, the A side of the 45rpm single, and a typical 4 minutes long, but popularity of the song, as DJs played both sides, meant the song was rereleased as the full version, Parts 1 & 2 that we know today as the album version.
It still holds the distinction as the longest #1 pop single of all time.

Top 10 for certain.

I never liked that song much.

Kinda pretentious.

Reminds me of all those folk music nerds in college who listened to T-bone Burnet and burned incense. On a sliding scale, it's less annoying than "One Tin Soldier" and more annoying than "I'd like to teach the world to sing."

Technically, no. "Hey Jude" holds that ranking, since the "single edit" of "American Pie" was considered to be just "part 1" - the A-side of the single.

Lex

Nope - Billboard credits American Pie - Parts I & II as the version that spent 4 weeks at #1 starting Jan 15/72, breaking the record formerly set by Hey Jude.

I love the song...when McLean sings it.

But it's in the Top 10 list of Karaoke Killers, along with "Paradise By The Dashboard Lights" and "Devil Went Down To Georgia."

;-)

>>>Anyone can buy a book.

But not everyone WILL. My boyfriend is known as "Dr Google" at work, because he actually takes the time to look stuff up. People will start talking about "Who was that guy who was in that show?" or "Who played third base for the Rockies back in the 90s?" He'll just Google it, get the answer, tell them, and they think he's friggin' amazing. He even TELLS them he got it via Google, and they STILL think it's incredible.

I had a co-worker who not only looked like Meatloaf, but actually had the RANGE. We'd go to karaoke and bring the house down with "Paradise". Then he'd REALLY scare people by doing a-ha's "Take on Me" and hitting the high notes.

>>>They were freaking HOT

Dude, Morton still IS.

Congratulations, JUB, for being a gay forum, discussing this song for several posts, and NOT bringing up the Madonna cover. ..|

It doesn't belong on that list it would be one of the best Rock songs or one of the best songs period but I wouldn't classify it as "Pop" maybe it's just because to me I think of bubblegum pop/club songs as "Pop" But "American Pie" is one of the best songs there is.... just not a pop one imo

I wouldn't consider it pop, and I rarely think about it, but every time I hear it, I love to hear it all. Perhaps it's in its own ranking.

I remember buying the album , and being surprised that most of the songs were ballads. One of them , Winterwood, was one of my favorite songs.
