this song is not pop. If you are gonna talk about "pop" back then, you go to the beach boys and david cassidy and artists like that. Personally I don't think this is his best song.
 
For 1972, it was a pop song that was played on Top 40 radio when music wasn't so tightly formatted that you could hear a variety of songs on the same station. I was in high school and that is a time in your life when you remember music well. Pop stations were on the AM dial, rock stations were emerging on the FM dial.
