does anyone know the chapter and verse, I'd be curious to read it.
thanks

Leviticus 18:22 “You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.”

Leviticus 20:13 “If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act.”

Luckily for us, it's all a bunch of foolish hogwash.

it doesn't...

there are a few times where it mentions somethign that could be interpreted as gay sex... but have nothing to do with sex at all... there wasn't even homosexuality in sodom... the story was about a city of people who wanted to beat and murder the outsider who was hiding in the house of an honest and true man and his family... the stranger was an angel.. and he was sent to test the people... and they failed... so he sent the man and his family away and told them not to look back for what they will see will instantly kill them and turn them to salt... so they left without looking back.. but his wife was curious... and turned around to see the horror the angel was bringing.. and she instantly turned to salt and crumbled...
the man and his 2 daughters fled... and stayed in a cave... his duaghters went crazy... and wanted to have sex with the father.. but the father refused.. so they got him drunk and drugged him and both had sex with him...

weird eh

the most commonly used verses from the bible that say homosexuality is wrong are found in leviticus... it also says we can't eat pork or shellfish and that men aren't allowed to cut their hair... but no one listens to that part

Check out the book of Romans, especially the first chapters.

Leviticus, 1 Corinthians 6:9, Romans 1: 26-27 are the good ones...the sodom and gomorrah story is in Genesis. Personally I like the bit about David and Jonathan...
For a new Gay myth i like this story by Toby Johnson about Adam and Steve

CGHJ,

Why don't you let people make up their minds about that, huh?

Many people have: The reverend Fred Phelps ("God Hates Fags") has made up his own mind and I don't see me changing it anytime soon.

I let people make up their own minds about Santa Claus, too. Me, I don't believe he lives at the North Pole, but I've never been there so I can't prove it.

The few vrses cited, a tiny few in a big book, are all quoted here out of context.

The actual answer to the thread question is: no where.

Ritual prostiution is proscribed and forcable sex is forbidden but that is different.

The word homosexuality or any frm thereof appears no where in Scriptures, by the way. Any English translation that uses that word has a political agenda and is not good let alone accurate Biblical translation.

We go over this topic a lot. There are threads here which go into much more detail.

CGHJ - your comments that "Luckily for us, it's all a bunch of foolish hogwash" is a bunch of foolish hogwash. Luckily for us.

To recap, other gems of wisdom from Leviticus include:

"They (shellfish) shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their flesh, but you shall regard their carcasses as an abomination." (Leviticus 11:11) [So two guys getting on is an abomination, but so is eating shellfish. Go figure.]

"For everyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall be upon him." (Leviticus 20:9)

"If a man lies with a woman during her sickness and uncovers her nakedness, he has discovered her flow, and she has uncovered the flow of her blood. Both of them shall be cut off from her people." (Leviticus 20:18)

"Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property." (Leviticus 25:44-45)

"Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard." (Leviticus 19:27)

"...and the swine, though it divides the hoof, having cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud, is unclean to you." (Leviticus 11:7)

"...do not plant your field with two kinds of seed. Do not wear material woven of two kinds of material." (Leviticus 19:19)

The Levitical Code is specifically addressed to a place and time. No one takes it as universal or binding. It is instructive. There is much in there which speaks of justice in ways we forget. I like it for what it has to teach us thusly. But it has lots on anachronisms that are indeed fairly amusing.

Who said that?

What do you mean? Supposedly God said it, supposedly Moses wrote it down...both of which are laughable.

If you want to look up the original versions, I suggest BibleGateway.com. It has every translation you can imagine. Just drop the reference into the search box (like, "Leviticus 18:22")

Luckily, all of them are unmittigated hogwash. Every single one.

Here's the context BTW (New International Version):

1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'I am the LORD your God. 3 You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices. 4 You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am the LORD your God. 5 Keep my decrees and laws, for the man who obeys them will live by them. I am the LORD.

6 " 'No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations. I am the LORD.

Hey, that one I can handle! except for twins, that's hawt.

7 " 'Do not dishonor your father by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; do not have relations with her.

Ewwww!

8 " 'Do not have sexual relations with your father's wife; that would dishonor your father.

Wait, isn't your father's wife also your mother? Oh wait, you used to be able to take multiple wives. And you can't sleep with any of them.

9 " 'Do not have sexual relations with your sister, either your father's daughter or your mother's daughter, whether she was born in the same home or elsewhere.

10 " 'Do not have sexual relations with your son's daughter or your daughter's daughter; that would dishonor you.

What a buzzkill. Can't I have sex with anyone?

11 " 'Do not have sexual relations with the daughter of your father's wife, born to your father; she is your sister.

12 " 'Do not have sexual relations with your father's sister; she is your father's close relative.

13 " 'Do not have sexual relations with your mother's sister, because she is your mother's close relative.

14 " 'Do not dishonor your father's brother by approaching his wife to have sexual relations; she is your aunt.

15 " 'Do not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law. She is your son's wife; do not have relations with her.

16 " 'Do not have sexual relations with your brother's wife; that would dishonor your brother.

Man, does he have to spell out every single possible combo?

17 " 'Do not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter. Do not have sexual relations with either her son's daughter or her daughter's daughter; they are her close relatives. That is wickedness.

No, it's hawt! Hey, I'm bi...which according to many people on this board is an abomination of it's own.

18 " 'Do not take your wife's sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is living.

Jerry Springer, hello?!

19 " 'Do not approach a woman to have sexual relations during the uncleanness of her monthly period.

What, they had to tell people this? "Thou shalt not get thy RedWings"

20 " 'Do not have sexual relations with your neighbor's wife and defile yourself with her.

21 " 'Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed [a] to Molech, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.

Seems reasonable.

22 " 'Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.

Whatever, this one I don't like so much. I choose to ignore it.

23 " 'Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it. A woman must not present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; that is a perversion.

I saw this on the internet the other day, and God's right, it's just wrong wrong wronng.

24 " 'Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. 25 Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. 26 But you must keep my decrees and my laws. The native-born and the aliens living among you must not do any of these detestable things, 27 for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. 28 And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you.

So there you have it...don't sleep with men, animals, or your mother, or God will kick you off your land and send you into exile.

Incidentally, this is what happened, according to the bible. The jews did these things, including allowing men to be temple prostitutes (those must have been good times though..."Hey, let's go to Temple, I'm horny as fuck and I need some ass"), and God sent the Babylonians to cart them off into exile. So lay with all the men you want, but don't be surprised if you get sent to Iraq. Wait, this happened to me, I fucked one of my buddies in the behind and he's on his way to Baghdad right now! Repent!!!

I recently read the bible cover to cover, and I am of the opinion that anyone who belives that book has anything relevant to say has never read it all the way through. It's a facinating book though. It's wrong to lay with a man but OK to rape virgins and keep slaves. you just have to pick out the parts you don't like.

Plus is lesbianism even mentioned in the bible? If not, then presumably at the very least the girls get a pass.

What do you mean? Supposedly God said it, supposedly Moses wrote it down...both of which are laughable.

It was in the 19th century that serius Biblical scholarship began real work on historical critical research.

You are way out of touch with Biblical scholarship. You are like two centuries out of date on authorship issues.

No one believes what you wrote except fundamentalists and you.

I'm sorry, but I think you are the one who's out of touch with the last 200 years of biblical scholarship. The majority view these days I believe is that there were actually several scribes over a period of several centuries that 'wrote' the first five books of the bible. These scribes assembled the bible we know today from various parts, and we can tell which scribe contributed which part because of their individual styles. I doubt any serious biblical scholar outside of a fundamentalist university believes either God or Moses wrote the Pentateuch, especially in the field of historical critical research. There have been many scholars willing to examine the real origins of the bible, instead of taking the history at face value and saying Moses wrote it.

I'm not sure how you equate my atheism with christian fundamentalism? Fundamentalists believe that Leviticus is true and the law of god, except the parts they don't like which they imagine Jesus did away with with the New Covenant. I think Leviticus was a set of rules set forth by a Bronze Age culture that had absolutely nothing in common with us over 2500-3500 years ago. God didn't write those rules, people did, a long, long, long freakin' time ago. I don't think any fundamentalist believes anything close to that, hell I think they probably actually thinnk God wrote it. Look at the fundies who think there are codes in the torah because God wrote it that way.

My point was, if you believe the bible (which you do and I do not), you have to listen to what God says as far as I'm concerned. They're not suggestions, 'God' says very clearly "Do this crap and you're screwed, I will punish you." And then later on in the bible He does just that by exiling the Jews to Babylon. Supposedly...of course I don't believe 'God' had anything to do with it, it was a later explanation of why bad events had occured. Even now you get people saying hurricane Katrina was God's wrath on New Orleans, instead of a low pressure system predicted by scientists, so it's a problem that continues today. Fortunately, it's all a bunch of unmittigated hogawsh or we'd all be in deep trouble.

I have to apologize...I think what you were probably saying was that mainstream christians today don't believe that Moses or God write the bible, either. I misunderstood what you were saying. I got hung up on your saying that I believed that stuff, which is certainly not the case ;)

Also, I did sort of take a fundamentalist position, which is that if the laws are from God, you must obey them. I don't believe they're the laws of God, but I do believe that people who believe in God and the bible should follow them if they think they came from God, which is the fundamentalist position. Just as long as no one thinks that I think you have to follow those laws. Well, except the one about not sleeping with your mother, that's just weird.

"Homosexuality" is forbiddened in the big "B" anywhere someone who is ignoring their own sinfulness wishes to find it. Get real! The Sin is, & has always been, the creation's attempt to usurp the Creator's right to judge & control tjat selfsame creation.

does anyone know the chapter and verse, I'd be curious to read it.
thanks
If you picked up a Bible you'd find it.

Romans 1:
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=romans 1;&version=31;

All of it--but especially from about verse 18 on.

Leviticus 18:22
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=3&chapter=18&verse=22&version=31&context=verse

Leviticus 20:13
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=3&chapter=20&verse=13&version=31&context=verse

1 Corinthians 6:9 and 10
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1 Corinthians 6: 9-10;&version=31;

1 Timothy 1:9-10
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search= 1 Timothy 1:9-10;&version=9;

Then there is the general tone of the Bible itself toward homosexuality. It is never discussed in a favorable--or even neutral--light. That includes the story of Sodom and Gomorrah among others.

I will not go any further into it here. There are many commentaries about the texts and what they may or may not mean.
It is up to you to decide what to believe about them.
Occam's Razor for me.

The bible only prohibits heterosexuality. The prohibition is even extremely explicit. See the story of Adam and Eve. You couldn't have it more explicit.

Futhermore, they had 2 sons (no daughters!!!!!!!), predestinated to become each others lovers as they were the only humans present, but that is another story.

Wentworth, shame on you for buying into the perversion of biblical text! The passages (except for Lev, which is loaded w/ no-nos) are all dependent upon translation. Most of what use the term "homosexuality"(shudder), refer to "temple prostitution" which the Jews viewed w/ horror. But that ain't "homo-sex-uality!! (The word is a bastard, created in the 19th century, & viewed w/ distaste by all linguists) The Bible is quite clear that "Sex" isn't "THE" sin but rather the attempt of the creation to control the creation. Just accept that the big JC loved all sinful beings & urged them to confess their sinfulness to their Father, who may (or may not) forgive their sin. No one is w/o sin!!
