No, I have no tips. Don't know anything, don't know anyone, I am thinking of posting a desperate thread somewhere in the "introduce yourself" section to gain some french-speaking people to talk to me, correspond with me or whatever, so that I would start speaking french well...

I don't understand how people can live in small towns. Ew. I would die if I weren't within a 10 mile radius of upscale shopping and dining. And when I say upscale I mean very upscale.

After you finish studying, get a visum and a bag of money, and simply move to where you'd like to be. If you can't find a room, there are always cheap pensions where you can live until you find something else.

Don't put it off, because -apart from you getting older and wiser- it's unlikely to get any easier if you waste your time waiting.

Yeah, I've been considering that. It's just that I'll have a ton of loans to repay and it's such a HUGE move that it's a bit scary! If anything, I'll do NEW England instead of England. Actually, I absolutely love Europe, it's just that language can be an issue. When I went to Paris, the people I ran into weren't that nice, but then again it's probably just my bad luck. Although there was a really nice lady selling candy and a French Arab man that was hitting on me!

Hmmm....I've yet to decide if you're being honest or not. Their is absolutely nothing wrong with living in the country. It's just different strokes for different folks. And if you've been to England, you would understand how stunning the English countryside can be.
Your unhealthy concern about upscale shopping and dining reminds me of the nouveau riche and trust fund babies. To paraphrase Wilde, people like you know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

I live where I want to live: New York. Of course, there are many, many places I would like to have a second, third, or fourth home.

If we are talking second, third, or fourth homes I would love one in Las Vegas, LA and Phoenix. All with a cabana boy, with or without the cabana.

Nope. Who's told You that? It's dangerous in Israel/Palestine, without a doubt. It's potentially dangerous in Lebanon, because you can get hit by an israeli missle. But Syria, so far so good, is a very safe place. Really. Haven't heard of any kidnapped tourist. I did hear of people missing in Turkey - for example a Pole who was dumb enough to go to eastern Turkey to investigate the matter of armenian genocide. But in Syria - no.

Hard to answer I've worked Internationally for for the last 23 years have been lucky to spend time in Asia, Europe and South America.
Would probably choose Thailand currently am here on extended holiday now (5 months).
Spend about 3 weeks a year in Florida = enough!

I've always considered Denver to be a "hidden nugget" - back even before there was a sports team with a similar name.

With suburban Boulder included, Denver metro is quite vibrant and cultural for its size, and there's a surprising amount of active night life there as well.

If there is one thing that is said about New England in general, those that are raised here, either love the area or can't wait to get the fuck out. I am the former and will find it tough to leave MA. I've already done a stint in Australia which was fun but England is still on my list of places to live (have visited there many times). I would say Canada too but I dunno.

My "bucket list" includes retirement to a city or area which has plenty of cultural opportunities and events, and is a safe place to be...and it has to be a place that I've found myself to very much like as well. If money were NO OBJECT AT ALL, the cities (READ: metropolitan areas) on my current "short list" would rank like this, in order of preference for my retirement:

1. Vancouver, BC
2. Portland, Oregon
3. Windsor, Ontario
4. Ann Arbor, Michigan
5. some parts of northern or central New Jersey (easy access to New York City)
6. various northern California (especially Berkeley)
7. Pittsburgh, Penna.
8. Denver-Boulder

I have a wide enough experience with ALL of the United States and Canada, that I think I can pretty much sort these places out spot-on.

However, most likely money will eliminate some of these (how expensive is greater Portland?), and the logistics of Canadian immigration are still unknown to me. In New Jersey, I'd be looking at Morristown, Dover, and perhaps Edison/Metuchen or even Passaic...I think that money would thoroughly rule out Hoboken or Jersey City which I also like a lot. Ann Arbor puts me right in the middle of my life "roots" and much that I've been fond of for quite a few decades. Windsor puts me not much more than a border crossing from the same roots, but it's Canadian which would add a lot of points to it. Pittsburgh is, I think, probably the most affordable. None of these places have a winter climate worse than where I am now, but a couple of them are pretty much equivalent, and avoiding worse winters or horrible summers ELIMINATED Madison, WI, Toronto, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Austin TX, Nashville, Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, etc. from the equation.

The logistics of distance could make Portland impossible, as my move will fall into the 99.9th Percentile for difficulty in moving, probably requiring multiple trips over a period of years, and most I do not dare let other people move without my supervision.

Vancouver at #1 is probably also the least likely on my short list of 8 destinations, because I understand it's about as expensive as New York City, it crosses a border (though a border I'd dearly love to cross), and it's very distant. A triple whammy.

As much as would SURELY like living in places like Melbourne or London or Auckland, places in another part of the world would put me too far from nearly everything I've come to love over the years.
