Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

The question doesn't ask whether it was CHICKEN EGGS or chickens that came first. The question only asks about "the egg" - which could, in fact, be cockroach eggs from 300 million years ago.

Evolution. The close relative of the chicken would have laid an egg that contained the modern-day chicken.

The chicken's ancestor laid eggs, and the birds inside had certain mutations that proved to be viable, and so the chicken evolved over time... but the egg came first.
