Hate crimes laws wouldn't have done a damn thing to save Matthew Sheppard. They wouldn't have stopped his attackers. His killers are spending the rest of their lives in prison (after making plea bargains to avoid the death penalty). What more would you have wanted done? I'm insulted by some condescending congressman who suggests that I need some sort of special protection. A .357 magnum that I know how to use will do more to protect me than any hate crimes law. And yes it is a major plank of the Republican party platform that law enforcement should not investigate or prosecute any cases with a gay victim.

I'm here because apparently I have a kinky side and on some level I'm enjoying myself, as masochistic as that may be.

we have equal protection as far as being crime victims go. If you assault us or batter us, you go to prison just like a straight victim. If you kill us, we get to fry (or lethally inject as the case may be) your ass, just like a straight victim. If you try to hurt me, I have the same legal right to blow your pathetic life out of existence in self defense just like a straight crime victim. For the record, I'm opposed to any hate crimes legislation on any basis, not just singling out sexual orientation.

we don't have equal protection. Hate crimes are crimes that usually do not have victim perp associations, and as a result, they often go unsolved. As such, the federal system is needed to find the perpetrators, and without the hate crime designation, the case stays within the juristiction of the local authorities. With limited resources they often go cold.

Federal statutes allow the FBI and the Federal Justice system to get involved. Its how they made the KKK stop hanging black men when the local sheriffs were not choosing to investigate and prosecute the crime.

DADT was a liberalization of the old policy, but it should be overturned. It's the Republicans clinging to it.

DOMA was a Repub creation, and they had a veto-proof vote, so Clinton's signing made zero difference.

And in this last presidential election, the Republican nominee believed marriage should only be man and woman while opposing the FMA and the Democratic nomineee thought marriage should only be man and a woman while opposing the FMA.

The Dem candidate also opposed Prop8.

You can harp on the imperfections of the dems all you like - it doesn't change the fact that Repubs are aggressively hostile to gays and our rights.

It always made me laugh, when I'd be sitting on an airplane and a wingnut would strike up a conversation with me on the flight, and then whine about "Czars" and Obama and it being "Communist". When I'd tell them as I was chuckling at them, "dude, don't you realize that the Communists hated the Czars and killed them, their families and exiled anyone that wasn't killed from the bloodline"? I can hardly think of anything more sad and pitiful than a gay Republican. There is more to Republicanism than its hostility to gays, but that has been such a feature in recent years that I shudder to think of the degree of self loathing that it would take for a gay man to be comfortable with it.

I still have yet to meet a gay Republican, who is totally out and open, and married to his gay spouse. The only gay Republicans I've met are single, and either in the closet completely or only partially out. Of those I have met only one was beyond 35, and living on his own. All the others lived at home with mommy and daddy still, and under 35.

I also wonder about gay people who would support a cause potentially detrimental to their own existence, but let us remember that it was the log cabin republicans who brought the case for Don't Ask Don't Tell.

Now if Eddy says he's a tea party fan and supports Palin or any of the other dangerous talking heads of the fringe right, then I'll insult him too. But I don't see him as being committed to the destruction of liberalism and the extermination of homos.

Although he repeatedly discredited himself, I admit that I did believe some of his story. If it's true that he's an undergraduate student, then it is likely that his Fall semester has begun and he is occupied with class work.
