  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Which soap operas have you watched?

Days of Our Lives still shows reruns here at night...strange cause usually they are day...

Interesting...Days of Our Lives is the last soap left on NBC.

They have had pretty much the same opening (with minor cosmetic changes) since 1965. I haven't done an evolution of a theme for them yet...

Oh heck, why not.....

1965 The opening from the first episode 8 November 1965

1966 Open and full cast close (from black & white film) with MacDonald Carey voice-over

1972-1993 Same hourglass and music, Macdonald Carey intro, different font lettering ...this particular cut is from 1985

1993 reworked opening...same music, MacDonald Carey intro, but new hourglass rotating, and background changes color...

2004 re-orchestrated music Macdonald Carey's voice still opens the show each day. He died in 1994.

2009 Present Days opening...

I cut my teeth(pun not intended)on DARK SHADOWS, then later started on DOOL, moved to GH with some OLTL in the mix. For the last 1 1/2 to 2 years I've been watching ATWT.
My nighttime soaps were DYNASTY, FALCON CREST and KNOTS LANDING. No DALLAS.

Btw--go LuRe!!!

the only one I have ever enjoyed and will is PASSIONS, I loved it so much when I was in school.

If you likes Passions, you would also enjoy Dark Shadows. It's because of Dark Shadows paving the way through the supernatural (witches, vampires, possessions, etc...) that Passions was created. They broke many of the taboo subjects for daytime. That also allowed (for better or worse, depending on your personal feelings) for Days of Our Lives to do the "Marlena possessed" storyline.

ronboy, could not disagree with you more. Michael Park and Maura West's win were well-deserved. Michael gave the performance of his ATWT-career this year as the man who accidentally killed his own brother. The scenes where he told Katie that it was he who made her a widow were sensational. Maura West was great, as well. The scenes she won for were her "intervention" scenes where she admitted being an alcoholic. When you consider that she was well into her ninth month of pregnancy when the scenes were shot, it's even more amazing.

However, I don't understand why Julie Pinson won as Supporting Actress. She is extremely annoying.

Michael's acting in those scenes, and the following story were pretty good. I don't know how he got through that silly-as-hell story with him running off to find a "replacement" for Brad. That story was just the worst!!! Especially since they got me all excited about Mark Collier returning as "Mike", only to have it be a week-long stint in an absolutely ridiculous story....

Btw, anyone watching those ABC "What If..." clips? Didn't really care for Sonny/Erica. Ryan/Carly was kinda hot, but my favorite was Todd Manning meeting Spinelli. I just wish Todd would've really lost his temper and choked the shit outta that kid..|

It almost makes me think that Michael Park (Jack) and Maura West (Carly) won as sentimental favorites because ATWT's days are dwindling as we write this thread. Of course, I am biased about Michael Park. He is from Canandaigua, NY which is a part of the Rochester area. We also attended the same college. I did get to meet him once, a very nice guy...

Scrapple, I suggest that you re-read my posting. I made no implication that either Michael Park or Maura West did not deserve their Emmy. But the way it happened made me THINK that they were the sentimental favorites. They are two very fine, dynamic actors and I hope that Jack and Carly end up together (the previews from tomorrow's episode indicate that they are moving in that direction).

Ugh!!! Michael Park's one of daytime's hottest & most talented, and I usually enjoy Maura's performances, but watching those two go back & forth is just MADDENING!!!
I was really starting to like Craig & Carly together.

I've watched every episode of Melrose Place. Heather Locklear was my favorite personality in the show.

I also loved Prison Break, although it's probably not considered a soap opera. Wentworth Miller - Ohhh baby!

I saw today's show (on line at CBS.com) and the previews for tomorrow's show, show Jack telling Carly that he "doesn't want to go back to Janet."

And romance may be brewing for Craig and Lily. They went to NYC to sign the contract for the new perfume factory in France (which doesn't really exist, thanks to Lucinda), and they were stranded by a baggage handler's strike. They are stuck together in an airport hotel room with one bed. Lily wanted to call her mother for the executive jet, but Craig reminded her that that's no way to show her independence. The show ended today with them flipping a coin for who gets the bed. They did not reveal the winner... Tomorrow's previews hint that they might be interested in each other. Knowing the history of the two characters, it seems ridiculous, but then again, with only two months left, all bets are off...We'll see.....

Nothing against Noelle, and I've only been watching for the last few years, but has Lily always been such a moron? Seriously, I don't know how that girl functions on a daily basis, with some of the bonehead moves she makes. Well, that actually goes for pretty much everyone in Oakdale...

Ignoring the annoyingly convenient circumstances surrounding them being in NY, Craig/Lily could be interesting. Probably one of the few NOT looking forward to a Holden/Lily reunion. Not that I'm invested in Holden/Molly either. Speaking of Holden, he needs to start spending more time working the Snyder Farm. Wearing as little as they'd let him get away with on daytime tv..| That man is aging very nicely!!!

I was in lust for Holden from his very first appearance. Jon Hensley is as hot now as he was 25 years ago! I think that viewers want Holden and Lily together because Hensley and Martha Byrne (who played Lily prior to Noelle beck, whom I also think is quite talented), had chemistry together. Noelle and Jon don't seem to generate the same kind of heat...I think Holden needs to take a cool dip in ithe Snyder pond. I'd love to see him in his cut-off jean shorts and barechested again (and he has a fine, fine chest...):D

First pic is Jon with Martha Byrne, circa 1988. The second picture is how he appears today.

I could slap the shit outta Kelley(Emily) right now. Getting paid to make out with Roger Howarth, and THEN getting to go home to Jon? Some bitches have all the luck:mad:

So true, so true...She gets to play with two of the hottest men in daytime.....:D

Today, Craig asked Lily why the two of them never hooked up. Let's review:

Craig had sex with Lily's biological mother (Iva Snyder), adoptive mother (Lucinda Walsh), aunt (Ellie Snyder), and adoptive aunt (Samantha Markham). He married Lily's sister (Sierra Esteban) and Lily's aunt (Meg Snyder). Oh, and he also had sex with a girl he once thought was his daughter (Dani Andropolous).

Lily, next time he asks that question, you've got some ammo.

I'm going to join the bandwagon and post the evolution of the theme for "my" soap, Neighbours.

That's how the titles were in '85, very simple using clips from the first episodes
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMBys8Zymh0[/ame]

The show got cancelled by Channel 7 at the end of 1985, but was picked up by rival Network Ten for the 1986 season, where it has been ever since. The show changed quite a bit during the change, and debuted brand new map style opening that lasted until 1989 or 1990
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNTlOLRvfSc[/ame]

Then they suddenly had the ridiculous idea to shorten the theme and have no titles in either 1989 or 1990, but thankfully it didn't last long
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDY9S9y6k18&feature=related[/ame]

The 1992 season opened with a new jazzy version of the theme song, sung by Greg Hindi, with a very 90s style titles that lasted until the end of the 95 season
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb79VDdCQ_k[/ame]

In 1996, the style was changed a bit but still veeery 90s
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfgWWAPYg1k[/ame]

1997-1998 had very organised titles, with the characters grouped together by the house they lived in, and it also had characters' names for the first time
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2HegEiBTcU&feature=related[/ame]

In 1999 they got inspired by the American soaps and decided to make a horrible cringeworthy CGI titles sequence, thankfully those lasted only for one and a half year. They also changed the theme, now featuring a woman's voice for the first time
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCW5WRY8tXs&feature=related[/ame]

In 2000, the show went wide-screen and they grabbed the oppurtunity and introduced brand new, happy, natural and sunny titles, that lasted all the way through to the end of 2002, except the first few months of 2002.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8e2p6EzeacI[/ame]

In 2002 they changed the theme yet again, imo the worst edition of the theme to date. They made some horrible pink titles to go with it, and as in 1999, it looks like they've had some inspiration from America. Those only lasted for a few months until they returned to the 2000 style
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DYINehNJwI&feature=related[/ame]

In 2003 they introduced brand new split screen style titles, that were perfectly in sync with the theme. Those were generally liked, and some say it's the best soap titles sequence of this century, I think that they're nonCGI contribute a lot towards that
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-TLKwKAfYE&feature=related[/ame]

In 2004 and 2005 they had another kind of split screen, and introduced CGI. Bad move.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4xcL-5zp2A[/ame]

In 2006 and 2007, they somehow decided that having titles that reminded viewers of The Simpsons was a brilliant idea. It wasn't!
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mpiAdp9kFk[/ame]

There was a revamp (and move to HD) of the show in mid-2007, and of course it gave us a brand new theme song and a brand new titles sequence. It was brilliant and fresh, and much faster than the previous theme and titles
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlDRADpHTcs&feature=related[/ame]

On the 18th March 2010, Neighbours turned 25 and to celebrate, brand new titles were launched. They are heavily influenced by the 2000-2002 titles, and are sunny, happy and fun.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ny0YQ6ZnuJU[/ame]

Phew, that was a lot of title sequences! There are of course a lot of different versions in each style, as Neighbours updates the titles whenever a character leaves/arrives.

Thanks for the review, scrapple. You are 100% correct! While I think Jon Lindstrom does a pretty good job of being Craig, I still miss Scott Bryce. I thought he was the hottest bad guy on ATWT back in the day...

Hey Kinski, thanks for the evolution of a theme on "Neighbours." Since the show doesn't air in the US (not in my area, anyway), I know next to nothing about the show. It was good to see your contribution. :D

One of the shows that I miss, from my childhood, is" The Edge of Night"

It was unique in the soap world, because it was a cross between a traditional soap and a prime time crime drama show. The mythical city of Monticello (the skyline featured in the opening and closing was actually Procter & Gamble's home city, Cincinnati, Ohio) had more than its share of violent crime and murder. And presiding over it all was Chief Bill Marceau (Mandel Kramer) of the Monticello Police; lawyer, (and later Dictrict Attorney) Mike Karr, and a whole cast of characters.

CBS scheduled it at 430 PM, an an attempt to attract a male audience returning home. Originally, this was supposed to be a daytime version of Perry Mason, the popular radio series. Earl Stanley Gardner was hired to create and write the show. When CBS wanted to give Perry a love interest, Gardner refused, and ended the agreement. The network, and its chief sponsor, Procter & Gamble hired another mystery writer, Irving Vendig, to create a thinly veiled version of Perry Mason. They hired John Larkin, who was Perry Mason on the radio, to play the main protagonist, Mike Karr.

Earl Stanley Gardner would later patch things up with CBS, and created the prime time Perry Mason series , which starred Raymond Burr, and began in 1957.

The show would move to 3:30 PM at some point, and then to 2:30, following "Guiding Light." CBS cancelled the show on 28 November 1975. It premiered the following Monday, 1 December 1975, on ABC, where it would remain until it's cancellation in December of 1984.

1956-1967 You Tube didn't have an opening, but here's a closing from that period which features the full cast (it reads like a who's who in daytime list from the 1960-'s through the 1980's...many familiar names). The organ theme is actually quite nice.

1972 color opening...note that the show was still presented live, and still had organ music.. The announcer was Hal Simms, who announced the show for many years...

1974 The famous theme music was now orchestrated. Here is the opening and closing, which features a full cast (another list of familiar names too!) Studio Announcer Hal Simms must have been sick on this day, because the announcer is clearly someone filling in...

Early 1980 The music remained pretty much the same when the show moved to ABC. Then in 1978, an new, more "haunting" sounding theme was commissioned. You Tube only had the closing, which featured a full vocal accompaniment. It is worth a listen...

Late 1980 In an attempt to give the show a more contemporary look, the theme was "jazzed up" and played faster, with almost a prime time opening look to it...The skyline of Mnticello was also updated to give the show a bigger city feel. They now used the skyline of downtown Los Angeles, California. The lady in red is Lois Kibbee who played ultra rich Geraldine Whitney.

1981-ish The closing, with vocals, was also updated... yes, that is Lori Loughlin, making her debut as "Jody Travis"

1984 The last, really jazzed up theme...Notice that the word "The" has now been dropped from the show title.....This is a great clip, because it features about a minute's worth of the show, featuring Forrest Compton as DA Mike Karr, Irving Allan Lee as Calvin Stoner, and Dennis Parker as Chief Derek Mallory (BTW, Parker was also known as porn star Wade Nichols!)

I was a HUGE fan of "Another World" for the last 10 years it was on. Some of those actors went onto other roles, but the best ones (Victoria Wynham, Charles Keating) never stared in another soap or t.v. show. They were the best! I miss them, and the show.......
