Diana Ross and Lionel Ritchie or Mariah Carey and Luther Vandross? Mariah and Luther in my opinion sounded light years better.

I prefer the original version by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie. But it could have been a lot better if Luther would have replaced Lionel.

The Diana version, by far. However, Diana's solo version has much more soul and heartache. I would have loved Diana to record. Their voices are so evenly matched. Luther often said he wanted to record with her, but somehow it just never happened.

oops, brain fart! The second sentance should have read....I would loved Diana & Luther to record together...

I have yet to find a Mariah cover version that I prefered to the original. I'm not a great fan of the song to begin with, but I'll take DR & LR (even with the silly "bum bum" section).

I liked the Luther/Mariah version mainly because of the instrumental part which sounded up-to-date. I remembered in 1994, PBS showed Luther's concert at Royal Albert Hall in the UK and Mariah was acting all demure and even the expression in her eyes looked different, there was like a soft glow in them as opposed to how she looks today in which her eyes look "bright"...at least both Diana and Lionel were being themselves. They weren't being phony when they were doing the duet.

The performance of Luther and Mariah at Royal Albert Hall in the UK that I remembered on PBS in 1994:

The original is a classic and the other version isn't and I can't stand Mariah Carey so there's no way it could better the original.

I prefer the Mariah/Luther version. I really don't like Diana (though I like some of her songs) and Lionel is tolerable but...up against my favorite artist of all time (Mariah Carey) and possibly the best male singer of all time..

I prefer all of Mariah's covers to the originals.

I like and own both versions. I like them about equal. Depends on what mood I'm in. The movie, "Endlesslove", could have been sooooo much better. I give the song a 9.5 and the movie a 4.
