... is what my friend of South Asian descent recently told me.
“Why do you say that?” I asked.
He replied, “Well, most white people are really a light copper colour, or even a dark beige. I’ve seen a lot of so-called ‘white’ people who are darker than I am!”
At this point I tried to impress upon him the basics of genetics, melanin distribution, and the premise of tanning. He knew about tanning, but I felt like patronizing him a little. Finally he told me to stop, because he didn’t believe me. He really thought that most 'white people' were just misusing the term. At last he did acknowledge that some ‘white people’ are very pale, but insisted that most were ‘faking it.’
We dropped the conversation. Later that night I began to wonder how I could prove him wrong. Then I found this picture, and, as they say, it was worth a thousand words.
Behold... the truest way to see how ‘white’ a "white person" is!
