Gay or Straight...Should men ever wear white dress shoes? Like with a suit or for a formal occasion? Or is that a fashion don't?

Personally I have yet to see an outfit they work with. If you have one then by all means go for it.

I personally hate white shoes.

I went on a date yesterday and the guy was wearing them and I was embarassed to be seen with him. I am yet to see someone who can pull that off. That is a major crime of fashion.

No, of course not. You're shallow because you're embarrassed to be seen with people with different tastes than you.

That's the pot calling the kettle black. He is embarrassed to be seen in public with people that wear white dress shoes but I'm judgmental and shallow? Sometimes, you make absolutely no sense at all.

So let me get this straight. I am shallow for being embarrassed to be seen in public with someone in white shoes? Would I also be considered shallow for being embarrassed to be seen in public with someone naked on the street because that is their taste? How is being embarrassed by something tantamount to being shallow? False pride? Maybe. Shallow? NO!

You should be embarrassed of your verbal diarrhea , but wait a minute, that would make u shallow, wouldn't it?

I make no sense to you because you assume I'm doing something like putting you down: but I'm simply a pot who recognizes a fellow kettle... does it make sense now?

Yes, you are.

I cannot believe that you're comparing someone wearing white shoes to indecent exposure. You're not only shallow but you can't articulate a reasonable defense. You can't even admit that you're shallow. I'd have more respect for you if you were honest about it. Now, while you think about that, I'm going to look for the best pair of white dress shoes to wear in your honour. :)

Nudists do not consider their being nude 'indecent exposure'. Isn't that a tad bit judgemental on your part? It is their preference, and that was the analogy I was alluding to. Everyone has preferences and no one should have to apologise for them.

And who said I was defending my having a preference?

Go wear your white shoes my friend and if u don't mind terribly, I will continue to be embarrassed by the thought of being seen in them or with anyone in them.

I felt a few cat claws in this exchange!

IF you're going to wear white shoes - remember, US convention, per military specifications reinforced by Jackie Kennedy Onassis and others -- ONLY between Memorial Day and Labor Day (End of May to beginning of September)

I've been trying to remember if I've ever seen anyone in them -- just sneaks / leather walking shoes - which are just high class sneakers.

Just opt for the Blue Suede shoes, instead! LOL. Now, let's all kiss and make up (or out!)

People wear white athletic shoes all the time (I'm wearing some now) and people don't go into a fashionista frenzy. Let's define our terms, OK?

So athletic shoes, deck shoes, skate shoes, espadrilles...these can be white with impunity. White dress shoes are anathema unless you are wearing a white tux or tails...and if you're wearing those, you're probably in a wedding or a prom and are more to be pitied than censured (spectators are really more appropriate, anyway). White bucks or white huaraches are very iffy, you have to have a cool retro look going on to carry them off. But really, white shoes just aren't worth the trouble of keeping them white, so why bother?

And being embarrassed by what someone else is wearing or not wearing is both shallow (shallow=overly concerned with appearances) and unconscionably egotistical ("Never mind how he looks, what about how I look with him?"). It's a fairly common problem, I don't think it makes one a bad person; but it's something worth thinking about.

It's not that athletic shoes CAN be white: they SHOULD be as white and as often as possible. And you can't compare the "iffiness" of white bucks to huaraches...
I didn't think so many people in the USA thought of sneakers as [athletic/sport/running] "shoes".

Who wears "white shoes" anyway: I don't think I've ever seen a real pair of white shoes around any pair of human feet... not even in a pic of Tom Wolfe.

EDIT: ok, I just googled it up  http://www.sohoblues.com/SoHoBlues/previewpages/preview4.jpg

1000 pardons, for my imprecise language.
It's late on this side of the continent, and I'm fading fast.
My brain cells aren't firing on all cylinders.

Swellegant- you have great precision -- skate shoes - as in Roller skating? Espadrilles - a term I haven't heard in a long time - I'm not a youngster, but I can't remember the precise definition of espadrilles, either. But the very name conjurs up a latin/carribean influene of a woven, light-weight, Summer shoe - I'm probably all wet.

Querido Belamy de Barcelona a Espana -- Again, lo siento.
Forgive my tired old Cabeza para la lingua imprecisa. And for my atrocious Spanglish. I grew up with sneakers long before they morphed into the multi-billion dollar industry of running/athletic/etc. "shoes" aka zapatos.

White Bucks and huaraches? buckskin - as in suede shoes?
Huaraches, como Espadrilles -- the terms are familiar, pero my tired old brain can't bring up the explicit definitions of what, exactly, they are.

Buenas noches, presados Senores. Sus Intelligencias magnificas de zapatos son grande. Or something like that.
Assuming I complimented you both on your knowledge of shoes, and didn't insult anyone's lineage along the way . . .

Y con esto, buenas noches, senores, buenas noches.

Remember back in the 1970's when we wore pastel colored polyester leisure suits with white shoes, wide white belts and wide ties? We had no shame wearing them.

Lets' go retro with these white accessories? Why not?

i dont own any, but i have seen a couple outfits that they work with. if someone were to wear them all the time that may be a different story, but otherwise, if the guy wants to wear white dress shoes i say go for it.

I had two-tone patten leather platform wingtips. Brown and Cream. Very studly at 18-20 during the disco craze.

Yeah, man. We were macho and cool, no two ways about it! LOL.

Spats, anyone?

The white plimsoles and skinny jeans look is pretty "in" in Oz. Personally, I choose not to partake.

There's an Emmylou Harris song called "White Shoes" that I'm somewhat obsessed but that's neaither here nor there.

Just realised I didn't read the first post properly, it's a no-no but rules are made to broken and fashion is a wank. So as much as I think it would look rubbish I say- do it if you think it looks good.
