http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/04/what-we-know-about-the-california-synagogue-shooting.html

Just before 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, a 19-year-old gunman armed with an AR-15-style assault rifle walked into the Chabad of Poway synagogue in Poway, California, and began firing on those inside. About 100 people had assembled at the synagogue for a celebration of the last day of Passover. The shooter, dressed in a green military vest, fatally wounded 60-year-old Lori Kaye, who jumped between him and Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, 57, who was delivering the sermon at the time of the attack and was subsequently injured in the hands. An 8-year-old girl, Noya Dahan, was struck in the face and leg with shrapnel, and 34-year-old Almog Peretz took shrapnel in the leg while trying to shield and evacuate children from danger. Some witnesses say the lone gunman shouted obscenities as he fired. His rifle apparently jammed, which appears to have limited the carnage. He then fled.

The shooter, later identified as John T. Earnest, reportedly posted a hate-filled “open letter” on social media beforehand in which he expressed white-supremacist views and claimed responsibility for an attempted arson at a mosque in nearby Escondido last month. (No one was injured in that attack, as the fire was quickly discovered and put out, and a message referencing last month’s Christchurch mosque attacks was left behind by the arsonist.)

The fatality was truly a martyr, deliberately attempting to block the line of fire to the rabbi.

She deserves to be celebrated in the midst of such horror.

The armed security guard (an off-duty Border Patrol agent paid to protect the congregation) not only failed to shoot the attacker on the spot, but failed to do anything more than shoot his vehicle as he fled.

Churches in my area have both visible police cars in the parking lots during services as well as uniformed officers paid to patrol, even in the sanctuary, during services. I hate it, nor do I believe it would help one bit as they are known and could easily be taken out before an assassin begins slaughter.

The evolution of this killer should be informative. He is the son of a science teacher, hardly a prime source for radical terrorism. He also surrendered, calling 911 and telling his location.

Prayers go to the congregation and family of Mrs. Kaye.

It should be noted that both the State of California and the United States have the death penalty, so trying the terrorist won't likely matter whether the State or Federal system initiates prosecution. Either way, there is a moratorium on California executions and the federal government seems to have little stomach for it, so this killer is likely to live out a long, long life in prison.

The linked article contained a quote from an online post the terrorist made before executing his assault.

The Intelligencer said:
The author claimed that he was a nursing student and had been planning the assault for less than four weeks, insisting the ease and speed in which he conceived and carried out the attack was a “testament to the fact that literally anyone can do this.”

But the lesson we should all learn is not that literally anyone can become a terrorist, but that literally anyone can thwart one. Mrs. Kaye did not survive, but her sacrifice is symbolic. She saved the thing she cherished, she believed in. Her loss is profoundly tragic, but it is also a touchstone for anyone who may encounter such horror in the future.

You can die like a member of the herd, or you can do something. You have next to no chance just cowering. You have some chance when you try to take action.

Let's be frank.

The life of Lori Kaye is equal to the lives of 250 unnamed brown people in South Asia.

It's painfully obvious that neither the victims in Sri Lanka, nor the ones in California, were targeted by their race. Painfully obvious.

The topic is already stressed without the artificially injected shit stirring.

Even more, the two events are not linked or retribution one for another. Making such a comment is little more than anarchistic.

Those killed in New Zealand, Sri Lanka and California were killed because of their religion.

But our level of public outrage depends on their location and unknowability and our disposition. (I hear Ocasio-Cortez's public outrage was very big for New Zealand but very small for Sri Lanka.)

Obviously he is just mentally ill.

An easy and obvious answer mikey.

Radical politics and religion are not only the go to answer for "dark skinned" people.

As Jason has pointed out, we should be paying respect to the victims.

Thankfully, it appears that the weapon jammed or it could have been so much worse.

Radicalized hate is radicalized hate. In this case, it is another white supremacist targeting the group that he has been indoctrinated to blame.

No one group has a corner on the market.

Actually, they were killed because of someone else's religious or political beliefs.

"Our"? Would you be a constituent in Representative Ocasio-Cortez's district, or do you perhaps have Canadian ancestry, so that you are compelled to think of the US as your country by proxy?

"Our"? ...

You used the word "anti-social" in that other thread about the obese corpse.

Did you mean the society of JUBLand? Because I was talking about the society of taxpayers who pay taxes to enable the helplessly obese eat themselves to death.

We were repeatedly told during my upbringing that we had no idea how lucky we were to be born on American soil. This is still true.

The eight year old little girl who was shot was from Sderot, Israel. Her family recently fled indiscriminate rocket attacks from Gaza.
