Kind of long but defenitely worth a watch. Defenitely one of the better cases in my opinion.
 
Judge Judy drives me INSANE!!!

She just gets up there and SCREAMS at people...

And then she CLAIMS that 10 Million people watch her show???

Having said that -- is this show REAL cases like in The Peoples Court -- or are these people just actors...

Cause if its real -- that is pretty HORRIBLE what that lady did...

They are real cases. The people aren't actors.

I saw this case several times and I'm still stunned that the lady thought she would get away with what she did.
 
Both parties get paid for appearing on the show and I'd assume have their hotel/travel fees waived.
 
On both Judge Judy and People's Court, the parties aren't paid per se. There is a fund which is divided between the two and the judgement (if any) is paid from that portion of the fund. The losing party must make up any of the judgement not covered by the fund.

I don't think I've ever read or heard what the fund amount is.

This is the disclaimer at the end of every show (People's Court):

"Both the plaintiff and the defendant have been paid from a fund for their appearance. The amount, if any, awarded in the case, is deducted from this fund, and the remainder is divided equally between both litigants. The amount of the fund is dependent on the size of the judgement."
 
ah, horrible poeple on tv. the defendant is stupid and horrible and in the wrong, no doubt about it. but judy is irritating and arrogant and downright insulting.

but i gotta admit, in small doses, its entertaining.

Its just that her voice GRATES MY NERVES -- and I could not IMAGINE putting myself in a position where I would EVER allow anyone to talk to me like that...

Not that I'm arrogant -- because I'm NOT -- but I do have boundaries that I protect...

I forgot to mention. The cases on People's Court are filed first in Small Claims Court. The litigants are both approached and both agree to drop their Small Claims cases and have the cases adjudicated on the programme.

The results are binding and, unless dismissed without prejudice, cannot be refilled in another court.
 
If you'll notice in the clip...

She said "when I'm 120 Years Old..."

Then later -- she asked -- "Don't you remember that I said when I was 150 years old..."

Even SHE doesn't listen to herself...

But even still, the description was correct except for the weight.
The whole matter could have been solved without getting the law involved. The "scammers" Ebay account could be suspended and the mom and daughter learn to read the description more carefully next time.
 
I've read that older people watch JJ as a type of schadenfreude porn in that they enjoy watching idiot young people. They should be more concerned about how they failed to raise this generation, the children of which weren't as valued as in previous generations, due to selfishness, IMO. You neglect children and this is what happens.

I have heard a figure of $1,500 mentioned SOMEWHERE a few years ago, but I'm not sure of its relevance and where/how it applies.
 
One of my guilty pleasures as a kid was the "Sailor Moon" cartoon. I don't care what anyone says. That show was the shit.

But seriously - I've seen auctions like this before on eBay where they say "this auction is for a photo only" or something like that...many times it's really small and hard to find. It's total BS. I'm glad Judge Judy humiliated her.

If I remember right, I think I read somewhere that she does average 10 million views per episode, or has over the time she's been on television, she has even surpased Oprah in viewers at one point. [don't know if she still does though!]

For what it's worth, she doesn't do that just for the camera. She is a lot different away from the bench, but, behind the bench, she has always been a no-nonsense judge.

Her father was a lawyer and judge, and Judy pursued the profession in a time when women simply didn't do that. Their place was in the home taking care of the kids and cleaning the house and making dinner for Daddy.

Not only was she a female, but she was a short one as well. For all intents and purposes, her 'place' was behind a secretary's desk in a law office instead of behind the prosecution desk in court. Her presence in the courtroom would have been virtually non-existent and ignored if she didn't use her voice to develop a persona that people would notice and pay attention to.

Later, when she became a judge in Family Court, she used that same forceful persona to deal out justice. Even back then she was humiliating deadbeat parents in front of the gallery, and she always maintained control of her courtroom with an iron hand.

Sure, she yells a lot. That's part of her personality. But she doesn't usually yell at people who don't deserve to be yelled at.

If I recall correctly without having to watch the entire clip again, I believe the seller made the mistake of including the weight of the cell phones in the ad which tended to confirm that she was selling the phones and not the photos and that the whole sale was a scam.

Why not? Politicians and religious zealots do it all the time when what goes on around them interferes with their beliefs. What rights do they have that Judge Judy doesn't have?

At least the people Judy talks that way to actually deserve to be talked to that way. Not in all cases, but in most of them.
