I like his work, but found him to be quite the slimeball.

Matraca Berg, Karyn Rochelle, Harlan Howard, and Don Schlitz. Dolly Parton has written some of the best material ever recorded, and has a large number of straight-out masterpieces, but her consistency is nowhere near the level of, say, Harlan and Matraca. She's sure written some real clunkers.

RYAN TEDDER Lead singer in 'onerepublic' and writes chart toppers for many artists today.

Yeah, I second Ryan Tedder. 'Bleeding Love', 'Happy' and 'Alive' are some of my favorite songs.

seriously though, Alanis Morissette is one of my faves as her lyrics are always deep, thoughtful and really touch me in a personal way.

I think she also writes all of her songs..not sure, at least lyrics.

And she's the only one I can think of who hasnt been mentioned already

Agreed 100%

Also, Lady Gaga. She can write some good songs.

Another person who should not be overlooked who is a legend in his life time as a singer and songwriter.
Here he is a few years ago in concert.
