Who Wants To Play Tag?

Eh. I was never wild about dodge ball either. But Tag? That was fun.

Kids these days are so micro-managed with all their activities and classes and whatnot. I wonder if they're allowed to even be kids anymore. Adulthood will come around quick enough, why deny them their time in the sun?

Here's my take on it... running around and playing is all part of growing up. This includes getting a bump, a bruise or a skinned knee from time to time. The thing that galls me about this article is that the school district is afraid of being sued. This country has become so lawsuit happy that its even forcing kids not to play. That is just plain sad.

Maybe the school should be afraid of parents suing because their kids are too fat from not having any play time.

Jeez, then the school will spend a bajillion dollars on "safe" exercise equipment.

how about some fresh air and sunshine? Skip the exercise machines.

Thats regodamndiculus. We we had recess in grammer school it was balls out energy release for that 15mins. every 2 hours while the teachers slammed about 4 or 5 smokes down and got amped on coffee. This is why so many kids are overweight and lazy. Besides all the shitty food they serve them now.
We had monkey bars and a couple slides that were easy a 10ft. climb. And we had blacktop, concrete, and gravel to land on to remind you to hang on tighter or to watchout for other kids rampaging through. If you fell off maybe you did a little bleeding maybe not. Can they still jump rope? I remember some of the girls could get like 4 ropes flying at once and then jump in and out, singles, doubles, backwards, forwards, workin it. It seemed like trying to jump through a room fan and not hit the blades. I remember a couple of nasty mishaps from not watching the rope speed close enough. My best friends sister had her feet jerked out from under her and landed on her ass. When the teacher came over to check it out she lifted up her dress and it looked like she'd been dragged a block and a half on the street. Next recess later shes back at it with the other girls.
It had to be something real serious to get sent to the nurse, and all she would do is have you lay down on the couch. It was about learning to survive in the world, making judgements, realizing limits. I'm so grateful only 2yrs. and schools over for my kids. Some of the goofy shit I see SOME of these kids do makes me wonder about all the "safety friendly" playground bullshit. They jump off the swing set backward from the top and land on a rubber mat. Then they jump off the 2nd floor into the pool but miss and then wonder why they wakeup in a bodycast and have to eat through a straw for 2 months.
A few parents have fucked it up for other kids by trying to make a quick buck out of scrapes and bruises, or going to court to cover the fact that their kid is an idiot and it must be someone else's fault. The parent who says her son "feels safer now" should start saving now to be able to buy him some balls when he becomes an adult, IMO she's building her own wimp, right at home.
Sorry for going off, I have a problem with this living in a bubble thing, you can't protect them forever from everything

I am surprised some of us are even alive knowing that as children we were eating the wrong things, playing with dangerous toys, licking the walls (lead based paint...anyone else do this?) and wearing polyester blended clothing (fire hazzards)...NOW TAG?????? My mother told me that running with scissors and listening to loud music was dangerous...I told her that she was wrong...IT WAS TAG!

Part of learning is realising your limits, making mistakes, getting cuts and bruises, interacting with other kids. If we cossett them so much then real life will come as a nasty shock. Best to learn early while your body is small and heals easily and is also less easy to damage. Much harder to break a short bone than a long one. When I was at a boarding school aged 8 or 9 we were responsible for mowing the lawns, rolling the pitches etc. We were taught about the machines, what to look out for, how to hold a starting handle so it can't break your wrist etc. We were allowed to mend them if we were so inclined and would be given help if needed. Can you see that happening now? And in later life when your lawn needs mowing you call a "proffessional" when it breaks down you call a different one. There is more to education than academic studies. Ask someone with a degree in electronics to fix a circuit and 90% of the time they won't have a clue because they have all theory ad no practise. Anyhow I've strayed off topic here, sorry.

I think the tag ban is totally ridiculous and the parents who would consider suing are responsible for damaging other childrens chilhoods and should be sued themselves for removing the right to a proper education.
