For those of you who have caller ID who get calls from an "Unavailable" source, if you have the number, you can may still be able to get some information. Check out this website:

"The phone is ringing, and I don't recognize the number,
All Caller ID says is, "NAME UNAVAILABLE".
Please help me figure out who is calling and what they want."

=========================================

I get several calls a week on my cell phone from the same 1-800 number. I never answer unless the caller is on my caller list.

I should get caller ID again...

I bought an answering machine instead, but have become paranoid to answer my phone due to work.

Allow me to explain:

Shift changes occur between employees, managament doesn't worry about it unless someone doesn't show up. So employees have the number of everyone they work with, and can phone all of them to take a shift.

Big hearted fellow that I am, I often have a hard time saying no to the people...So long as I can actually work that day.

The problem arises with this: My specialized job has only about 12 other guys...Then there's about 30+ girls who do general jobs around the place. The problem is, we're trained how to do their job...So, we usually get calls from both sides...

I've gotten 4 calls to work for someone else in the past week, that I've started to use the "answering machine screener" tactic...Somewhat annoying, and most people hang up anyways...

I did the answering machine thing for a while, but I got tired of not being able to answer my damn phone and my friends got tired of saying, "Hello, Chris? It's me, are you there? Pick up!"

So I broke down and got Caller ID back. I also have Privacy Manager, which pretty much screens my calls for me. If an "unavailable" or "unidentified" caller tries to get through, Privacy Manager picks it up first and asks the caller to identify themselves. In most cases they hang up. But if the caller really wants to get through, I then get a call from Privacy Manager (not the caller) telling me who it is and asking me if I want to accept or decline the call.

Best freakin thing since fried chicken.

I swear by it. Here it's called Annonymous Caller ID and it works great. It's part of our bundle but if you buy it a la carte its about $4/month and well spent

I don't know if it's available everywhere, but I have a service called 'Ringmaster'. It's one line with 3 phone numbers. Each one makes the phone ring differently. The main number is public, but the others are not. Only my family and close friends have those numbers. I pretty much don't even react when the main ring sounds. It's always "out of area" or "unavailable". I still look at the caller ID, because I still get those computerized calls just going thru a list of numbers and sometimes they come through on the 'private' numbers. This service is still the best thing I have ever found to keep out the unwanted callers.

The number on my caller ID was 212 448 5501. I entered it in the box on the whocalledus website and this is what I got:

http://whocalled.us/lookup/2124485501

I filed a complaint on the do not call site:

https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx

I read some of those peoples comments, and some of them were kind of dumb. Some of them were along the lines of "I don't answer when they call, but they keep calling." Well, if you don't answer, of course they're just going to try again!

We have the Telephone Preference Service here in the UK. You register your home phoneline number. It is free, and requires marketing companies to check first before phoning. Anyone who phones can be reminded of the fact you're with the TPS and you can tell them that you're gonna be filing a complaint against them. That usually shuts them up and they apologise.

WE always screen our phone calls!

...........and, don't expect to get us to answer if your number does NOT appear on caller ID..............

HEY! We pay for this service for a reason.........to keep un-wanted calls from us and those annoying people trying to sell us their wares!

HECK NO! We do NOT want anonymous crap calls......

Thanks for posting this thread!(*8*) (*8*)

Im the same , someone dosent show up at work , and they call me straight away , and im am too nice to say no , so i have become to dependable , but know every now and again i turn the offer down because im either "out of town or have plans later " wink wink haha

All my mates have thier number listed as private and i do as well , i do agree it is annoying exspecially prank calls, i was getting pranked by someone i didnt even know but i couldnt call them back coz i couldnt get thier number , really pissed me off, i also hate picking uo the phone and answering not knowing who it is, although i cant talk mine is private as well

In a perfect world, however, we'd be able to use Privacy Manager (or Caller ID) to block numbers of those we don't want calling. Like you could punch in the number and they would be in Privacy Manager hell forever, it wouldn't even ring in to your house.

Now THAT would be sweet.

i'm sorry, but if caller ID comes up as "unavailable" then how the hell are you getting the number?

on my phone, if it says unavailable then we have no way of knowing what the number is, and there is no way to do a reverse look-up if you don't have the number

On my caller ID, the number showed up but name/location was listed as Unavailable. I copied the number down and then Googled it to see if I could find out where it was coming from. That's when I found a link to the www.whocalled.us site

And thanks for posting that. I found out a couple of numbers - or, meaning, where they were coming from. I mean people (assholes?) that call my house ALL FREAKIN DAY LONG.

Now I know who they are, the jerks :grrr:

oh well at least you were provided with the number itself...thats easy enough to do a reverse look-up...i just never get the number if it shows up as 'private' or 'unavailable'- thats all it will tell me:p
