In this week's TIME Magazine (p 24 - Dec 3, 2007 edition)

Americans aren't the only ones squabbling over immigration. As more nations join the European Union, massive influxes of migrants are moving westward. Latest official figures don't capture some movement, like the exodus of Poles to Britain. But the stress is beginning to show: Italy has been in a recent uproar since a Romanian immigrant was charged with the murder of an Italian woman outside Rome.

then they have a map showing the largest from/to re: immigration - kinda neat

here's my shorthand version

again, this represents the "largest migrant groups moving to each country and number legally admitted"

BRAZIL TO PORTUGAL - 2,500
PORTUGAL TO LUXEMBOURG - 3,100
FRANCE TO BELGIUM - 9,500
ALGERIA TO FRANCE - 26,600
GERMANY TO SWITZERLAND - 18,100
POLAND TO GERMANY - 125,000 WOW
ROMANIA TO SPAIN - 89,500
ROMANIA TO ITALY - 62,300
ROMANIA TO HUNGARY - 11,000
AUSTRALIA TO BRITAIN - 33,500
BRITAIN TO IRELAND - 5,900
RUSSIA TO GREECE - 4,800 SEEMS LOW NO?
RUSSIA TO FINLAND - 1,900
SWEDEN TO NORWAY - 2,400
DENMARK TO SWEDEN - 3,800
UKRAINE TO CZECH REP 16,300
UKRAINE TO POLAND - 10,200

not all the figures - but u get the idea

people r dying to get out of Romania eh??

thought it was interesting (not the romania thing)

Welcome to the future. National populations are becoming mixed just as races are becoming mixed. Can National borders be far behind? Come back in a few hundred years and the present world will be unrecognizable.

I, for one, have been trying to do my bit by breeding with anybody and everybody.

Welcome to a world without borders...

I kind of LIKE the concept....

Not sure I'll like the REALITY...

We are ALL humans --- AFTERALL...

And on a PERSONAL note -- Why are the Ukranians STILL leaving Ukraine (although I'm glad my grandparents did)????

:D:D:D

The people trying to get out of Romania are the Hungarians. They are sick and tired of being subjected to many violations of basic minority rights: Hungarian-language schools have been closed down over time, their political rights have been suppressed and they have even been subject to slow, forced nationalisation by various Romanian governments over the years.

As Americans we're so myopic in terms of immigration.

People's typically migrate all of the time.

During the late 70's and early 80's Americans were migrating from the Rust Belt; Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, to the Bible Belt; Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas. Not to mention the Southwest; Arizona, Nevada, and Southern California.

During the most current "immigration" debate they claim that there are as many as 12 million "Mexican" immigrants currently working in the U.S.

How many Canadians?

How many Koreans, Vietnamese, and Chinese are there?

I know that they're here, even in Texas.

How many Americans have "immigrated" to Canada, Costa Rica, Columbia, Australia, and anywhere else outside of the continental United States?

One would think that the Time Magazine article would have factored in the fall of Communism, and the establishment of the European Union as one of the reasons for the increase in migration of peoples from one "state" to another.

But apparently the only real "migrants" that Americans should be concerned about speak Spanish.

What really seems to have a lot of Europeans concerned are the influx of Muslims, and that faith into their regions.

Of course, why wouldn't they? In Europe the xenophobia seems to be based upon religion, while here in North America it appears to be based upon skin color, language, AND religion.

When I was a kid there use to be a bumper sticker here in Texas that read "If you Love New York, then take I-30 East."

Prior to that the common phrase was "Yankee Go Home!"

But then that became the motto of most South Americans. ;)

I guess here in America we've already got beyond who's crossing state lines, to who's crossing International boundaries.

Has anyone in North America noticed that when you buy anything with "some assembly required" that instructions are provided in English, Spanish, and French?

Does anyone know why?

Because those are the three primary languages spoken in this part of the hemisphere.

I, for one, have been trying to do my bit by breeding with anybody and everybody.

For many years, this was my philosophy also.

It seemed to be working, maybe I should have kept at it.....

Do I have to remind you that the US citizens who retire, or work, overseas do so legally?

That may be true that we do, but the reason there is such an influx of illegal migration into the US is because the US does not provide a way legally for these people to come into the country. To enter the US legally, you must provide documentation that you can support yourself without working. That requirement alone eliminates the possibility of most Hispanic migrants coming in legally, because they are coming to find work, because they have no money at all.

A guest worker visa program would solve the problem. Give them a legal way of doing it, and the majority will do it legally. There will always be a few, who won't follow the rules and laws, but that even happens here in Colombia. I've met at least 5 people from the US here illegally. They come, and get a tourist visa, and like the country so much, they overstay their visa, thereby becoming illegal. Some I've met, are even working illegally here. Visas give some control over immigrants, but without visas, you get what is happening in the US.

In Colombia, where I migrated to after I retired, the Government just wants to see that I don't need a job to support myself, so my visa is obtained with a letter from the US Embassy here stating I'm receiving Social Security, and can support myself. Easy enough to get. I meet a lot of backpackers who constantly overstay their tourist visas, and work usually teaching a language to Colombians, but when caught, the country just requires them to leave the country for a day before returning to get another visa. They would have to do something criminal to actually get banned from the country, and if the criminal activity was bad enough, possibly jail. It could be the same in the US if Americans were not so uptight about skin color and language barriers.

By the way Chance, thanks for posting this. You've reinforced my point about how the world is changing, and how because of NAFTA, and the TLC we will see more of the same in the Western Hemisphere into the future. The borders are melting, and migrations will occur, because they can.

Just as the races are mixing, world populations are mixing as well. A few years ago, TIME magazine also published an issue about the mixing races, with a colorful cover depicting the results of race mixing. The end result was a very beautiful young woman. I don't have a link, but maybe somebody out there smarter than me can find it and post it for us.

How about the thousands that go oversea tax havens to avoid income and corporate taxes, as well as thousands of money launderers, to "invest" in foreign countries?
