Why are a lot of gay men obsessed with pop culture?

And I'm GAY so no this isn't some bigot making snap judgments about gay men.

It's just something I've noticed from a lot of gay men I meet. They're all obsessed with the latest celebrity gossip and are obsessed with being 'trendy' and 'fitting in' and look down their nose at anyone who isn't 'in' with the times or wearing, watching, or listening to 'what's hot'.

I know this kind of behavior is certainly not exclusive to gay men but out of all the people I meet it seems that most of the gay ones are the ones most obsessed with all of these things. Why??? And why do they have to be so nasty and look down their noses at you whenever you express an interest in something that isn't consider...*sighs*....'cool'. I mean I can't believe people still even do that!

...maybe it's you?

I don't find this to be the case at all except maybe when I was 21.

A quick run down of the last 100 conversations I have had with gay men and I don't think anyone mentioned any of that.

...yeah...must be you

I've often wondered the same, but about the entire population as a whole.....

...btw, this gay man cares very little about pop culture .

Why are there talk shows? Because it fills a demand. There are people - I dont think it is just gays either - who watch Leno, Letterman. Ricki, Oprah, Wendy, Queen Latifah, etc. If no one watched talk shows, there would not be talk shows. People cant live on a show that doesnt make money.

Why is there People magazine?

When you look at it as if you were an alien from outer space, it would seem silly that people act a certain way around certain people. Imagine Cher was a court reporter or the Queen was a hooker. They are just people and they have a certain life that allows them to have others interested in them

People are afraid of getting, or seeming to appear, old. So they stay in touch with current or trendy culture.

It seems gay guys are more likely to be interested in specific aspects of popular culture - fashion, popular music, who's-dating-who - but even there, there's a lot of wiggle room. I know more straight guys than gay who are interested in fashion, for instance. And I guess I've aged out of most aspects of popular culture, other than "which new rock songs/albums/bands might I be interested in?"

Pop culture is full of glitz, glamor, "fun" appearances and living; it helps people escape their own realities for a moment just like Mr. Rogers' make belief land for kids.

gay men are shallow self centred bitches.

Question answered.

Mike, you need to stop putting yourself down, i am sure you have some good points, well pretty sure.

^First thought wrong....I don't want to go through rehab again....

You need to stop hanging around bitches, gurl! Move to rural Iowa.

Seriously, this is not the case for me for gays and lesbians I meet. They are aware of pop culture but NOT obsessed. I don't live in LA either.

Loo code was 98103.....

But I stuffed it up cos some bitch was in there...

"I'm in here...I'm in here..."

fuck you ....c*nt!

People still do it. Not exclusive to "teh gays".

Find a better breed of friend, or, at least, friends that obsess over what YOU obsess over.

think there are all kinds of gays--nerds, sci-fi, intellectuals, geeks, theater queens, opera/classical music queens lol, etc---and many more so they are out there---many who are not obsessed over popular culture.

I'm interested in popular culture academically. It's a field of critical theory called "cultural studies." It is interdisciplinary and is about the study of how culture affects people/society, and vice versa. It's actually pretty interesting!

I think the drive to be current... relevant... the new thing on the block... "Mr. Right" is sometimes so overpowering guys lose sight of taking time to stop and smell the roses and actually get to know a guy.
