  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Why are a lot of gay men obsessed with pop culture?

I'm interested in popular culture academically. It's a field of critical theory called "cultural studies." It is interdisciplinary and is about the study of how culture affects people/society, and vice versa. It's actually pretty interesting!

I'm sure it's interesting for you but is it in any way useful?

I was involved in advertising a government-sponsored free vaccination program. We had to learn how to DUMB IT DOWN because the general population is getting DUMB and DUMBER every decade. I can understand people having a shorter and shorter attention span every decade but, as i say, its getting more dumb every decade.

I know it's a gay stereotype, but I've never known a gay man who fit that stereotype.

I think it depends on the individual really. My straight friends are wayyyyyy more obsessed about mainstream pop culture than me. A lot of times I don't even know which celebrity my friends are talking about or obsess over. I can also count the number of times I have been to the cinema or concert (3 times cinema and one concert so far in my life) I am more of a geek; video game type of person, and basically obsesses over anything Japanese men likes I mean video game culture lol.

If the first question you ask when confronted with an activity is "how useful is it?"...I can't imagine how grey and uninteresting your life is. The useful stuff might keep the wheels turning, but the useless stuff is what makes us WANT to keep the wheels turning.

...useless...

 :##:

I think that's why the poor people of Africa and the Middle East hate Americans.

They want food, shelter, health and safety. Rich people must be decadent if the are so overweight and self-satisfied to like trash culture and take unhealthy, mind-altering drugs to escape their boredom.

Not sure whether your inability to grasp a fairly obvious point is deliberate or not. Let's pretend it isn't, so I can go on with the explanation.

Yes, everybody wants sustenance, shelter, health and a sense of safety. I'd go so far as to classify those as "needs". But the things you classify as "useless" are not confined to we fat drug-addled Americans. Music is not only found among the rich. Dancing, storytelling, and play-acting are not unknown to the lower classes. And they partake in them for the same reason we do - because a life spent doing nothing but "useful" activities is no life at all.

If you truly believe what you have written, I would find it difficult to believe you have friends. As friends are a "useless" thing to have. Perhaps you have them as a means to an end, to obtain more sustenance, shelter, health or a sense of safety. But I doubt anybody would consider such people "friends" by whatever definition.

yeah. those gays.

It's only gay people who watch celebrity gossip shows, read Perez Hilton, read In Touch and watch reality shows about famous rich girls in Hollywood.

Straight people never do that and don't buy pop records. They only watch PBS and read The New York Times business section. Straight people are NEVER interested in the love lives of celebrities. Ever.

It's just gay people.

ugh.

I would say a lot of people are obsessed with pop culture not just the gays.

And I can't talk for you but I'm gay and I don't watch EW and whatever
