Thats not true because they don't know I am gay yet.... I just started this new class and I was just observing them and the ones who I thought were good looking were throwing out insults like (Thats some gay shit or shut up faggot and such)

Well where do you live? I am not choosing them on purpose! I just like them because they are attractive physically to me.... On the contrary, from what I've experienced in society, it's the straight guys who are the most ugly and undesirable who are the most homophobic.

A mutual friend in high school told me he could tolerate faggots as long as they "didn't try any funny business with him" and I nearly spit out the water I had been drinking at the time all over him.

I know it will probably not be a popular thing to say, but just because they say, “faggot, and that’s so gay, etc.” doesn’t make them homophobes. I know a lot of people that say that and more and they are just fine with GLBT people. Those are just words, and while they can hurt, they can also just be. Words should be used. At time they will offend, at times they will not, but they are just words. It is the true meaning that matters.
