Hot guys can afford to be assholes because no matter how ugly their manners and personalities are, they will always have a drove of guys who will worship them no matter what. I've seen this in real world on many occasions.

I know people are responsible for their own self-esteem, but that's no excuse for others to belittle them. While Aric's pro-confidence sentiment and disinterest in time wasters are reasonable, his crass way of expressing it makes him look conceited. A more positive, less intimidating alternative would be "I like confident guys. Confidence is sexy.", or something to that effect.



I've also been on both sides of the coin you describe, so I can see where you and guys like Aric are coming from. It's not so much what people say that I object to, but how they say it. I guess I just prefer the more soft-spoken type to the sharp-tongued.

Well, I'm more like you in the sense that I try not to offend others when they contact me, even if they are aggressive or creepy in how they do so. I usually say "hello" when contacted, and if someone weirds me out, I just tell them thank you and that I'm not interested. And then, depending on if they continue, I block them. So, Aric's approach isn't mine, but I don't really see his as being insulting so much as being direct. It's certainly not a "no fats, oldies or femmes" kind of crassness.

Self-esteem (and its related emotions) is related to the level of certain neurotransmitters in the brain.

The idea that one can control this level of neurotransmitters, by an effort of will, really is obsolete pop psychology from the 80s.

Blackbelt, some people—rightist Christians—also think we're responsible for our sexual orientation, and homosexuality is a lifestyle choice, and can also be changed by an effort of will.

I would have thought that you, in particular, knew better, Blackbelt.

Yup, my background is in Psychology. Yup, I teach it as well. Yup, I've worked with thousands of students over the years and have seen this in action. Be careful when you mention neurotransmitters, since *GASP* those are studied by psychologists as well.

I suppose it's entirely impossible that some of these guys may have started a profile and then were harassed, crudely propositioned, sent unrequested dick shots, cursed out for not responding, lied to and/or stalked, insulted, treated like meat or let down by guys repeatedly on Grindr who saw them only for their looks.

No, surely they're all shallow and mean just because they are. I'm certain the people who pursue them are always polite and appropriate, and never do anything that might warrant some of the warnings we've seen here.

Honestly speaking, we all have a list of qualifiers for dating people. Some of them are just more vocal and a bit cruder than others. I probably would not date someone that didn't drink alcohol or coffee, but I wouldn't post "must be boozehound and caffeine addict" (oops! that was sarcasm). Although mocking Asians or thinking you are some "social elite" is really pathetic and does speak a lot about their personality.

There is a way that prolonged verbal abuse can break a person down, involving pain centers in the brain and a convoluted sequence of brain chemistry changes, but it's too arcane to mention here.

As of this point, they haven't found a way to do the opposite, and a person certainly can't do it himself, by an effort of will.
