Why are you gay?

Because that is what makes me truly happy. I spent many years in denial and sleeping with women because that's what I thought I was supposed to do. The first man made me realize my true calling.

For one thing, why we are gay is terribly interesting, but it doesn't ultimately matter. It really is like wondering why you're blond or why you're short or why you're brilliant. Why doesn't matter: how you adapt to it and what you do with it, these things matter.

I don't ask myself why I am gay; I have occasionally wondered why, but I don't suppose we'll ever find out, not in my lifetime anyway, so I move forward: I ask myself what I'm going to do with my gay day and my gay life. Just as I don't waste time asking why I'm an alcoholic or why my hair is turning gray or why I'm incredibly intelligent but also incredibly lazy: I just accept what I am and work on being the best recovering alcoholic grizzle-headed unambitious smart-ass faggot I can be.

And the reason most of us sniped about the question is because when we are asked this question, it is usually in an accusatory tone. It's seldom a question of scientific curiosity, it is usually a question demanding that you justify your existence to the questioner's world-view. And that tends to rile some of us.

So if the question isn't "Why are you gay (implying that you chose to be gay out of a menu of other choices)?" but rather "What do you think homosexuality is all about, both as a natural occurence and as a human phenomon?"... then it's a valid question. It's all in the wording.

And in terms of people questioning ourselves why we're gay--keep in mind that sometimes genetic traits that seem counterproductive get maintained in the gene pool because there is some underlying benefit. In the case of homosexuality, my guess is that it provides some sort of non-competitive nurturing or creative abilities.

For an example of seemingly counter-productive genes, the classic example (if I remember this correctly) is the sickle-cell anemia gene. This is a *disease*, so why would it be carried along from generation to generation? Well, it provides resistance to malaria, which is a much bigger problem.

So nature is not always as obvious at it seems.

That's a very scary notion in my opinion. If there is a gay gene, it would be possible to identify it and, when technology is ready for it, to detect it before childbirth. How many abortions would be done because their child had the gay gene? And if I may get really paranoid for a moment, it could be possible to alter the gene to make people straight. Red pill, blue pill. I for one would not want that.

You are spot-on, Robert~Marlene.

One's internal feelings are subjective and self-reported. It really comes down to one person's word against another's, and so many people in this world deny the validity of others' feelings.

That doesn't apply only to sexual feelings. Think of how many times you've heard parents tell little children "Shut up or I'll give you something to really cry about" or one man call another man "wuss" or "pussy" in regards to feelings of tenderness.

The matter does seem to come to its worst expression in regards to homosexuality, though. Most of the straight world denies outright the validity of homosexual feelings. If they experienced it themselves they wouldn't be so quick to judge.
 
I'm gay because that's the way God and nature made me from the moment I was conceived. And it was no accident. It's exactly the way it was supposed to be.

After carefully review all the research material and listening to the passionate debate on both sides I made my decision to be homosexual, because I thought I receive better benefits and all I got was a lousy t-shirt.

well, its a really long story, one day i was about 9 years old, i arrived home from school, "can you please walk the dogs" i heard my mum say to me, so i went and grabbed the leads from on top of their kennel, and a tenis ball and bat. I walked with the dogs the usual way to the park, over the bridge, down the street, look both was before crossing the road. finally i arrived at the park, and let to dogs off their leads, i was playing catch with the dogs for what seemed like hours. and finally they just got too tired to play anymore, so i had to walk them home again. the next day mum told me that because i was such a good boy, santawould put me on his nice list. are you guys sick of this story yet because i am. i just thought i would type somthing completly random to symbolise how stupid and random this question was.
