I prefer they dont sing.... just shut up and flex....

I fail to understand why gay icons are mostly (if not all) women.
I mean, women are more compassionate in terms of embracing the gay (albeit the witches and the banshees like Bachmann), but I personally feel a lot better when a man accepts us and doesn't think we will sleep with him. That is all and all is that.
I approve more of JayHawk's idea. We need a man gay icon, straight or gay ..|

Jan Terri and Mrs Miller are huge gay icons!!

Because many of these "hags" didn't just talk the talk, they walked it in times where being supportive of gays was frowned upon and still is in many circles.

Gay icon often equaled:
bigger than life
loves life
projects an "accept me as I am or to hell with you" attitude
acts or sings in such a way that you feel/relate to his or her pain
shares that pain
smart/wicked sense of humor
tough/has struggled
is often misunderstood/judged/talked about
showed support of/understanding of/friendship towards the LGBT community.

What they often were not was gay.

I'm happy in my lifetime to see people like Ellen, Rachel Maddow, Rosie, Neil Patrick Harris, Dustin Lance Black, etc., becoming Gay Icons not for the reasons listed above, but because of the fact that they are, in many ways, us. As we become our own heroes, the idea of non-gay and lesbian icons may well replace the kinds we have had in the past.

Perhaps that's why I see people like Christina and Lady Gaga more as Gay Allies; their support of us is terrific, but when there are literally thousands of people on the web now who one can seek out as role models in every day life, the need for larger than life Icons doesn't seem quite as great.

I had to laugh when I read the the title of this thread.

Mainly because I know that, here, 1 or 3 or 30 of you would be highly offended. It's like clockwork.

As rudely and crudely as she put it, bitch makes a point: of course, clueless bitch's argument falls to pieces when bitch insists we should be worshiping so-and-so in stead. :sigh:

Then I came across this:

Those "old hags" were playing to gay audiences and in bathouses.....

Bathhouses? WTF?

Kitsch value they have plenty of, but the reality is waaay too dehumanizing to bother mentioning. How the fuck is playing a bathhouse the measure of anything other than pure grossness?

If that's the gay legacy I have to live up to, then fucking scratch my fucking name off it, fuckers.

(rant of a non-American)Just because some white women and an occasional "fierce" black woman sung some great songs instantly makes them "gay icons"? Get the fuck out to the old and new icons. There are so many gays in this world, living in ALL the countries on this planet and in possibly every culture existed and we are supposed to bow and worship what the America/West shits out? I piss on your gay icons.(end of rant)

Can we even not talk about Christina? Every time she opens her mouth I want to shove a shoe down her throat pipe.

Lady Gaga is probably more internationally known than the other old gay icons. But she tries too hard to be a gay icon and desires that role a little too much. Yeah, she makes good music videos and is even more passionate about gay rights than I, a gay man, will ever be but this sort of entitlement should come even without saying. The other ladies had the gay icon role given to them. On the other hand, Lady Gaga salivated over that title and pimped herself out. Cyndi doesn't pimp herself out to the tasteless gay horde but yet still support us with her music and her community involvement projects.

That being said, whatever singer or actress that has empowered you to be yourself and to be more confident would qualify to you as a gay icon. S/he should be your icon. To me, Madonna can't be a gay icon since she can neither sing nor act.

Rebbecca Black will rule the gays. Mark my words.

At least LGBT support is a major component of Lady Gaga's act, not to mention the fact that she's bi herself. She actively campaigns for gay rights, is associated with them, even wrote an entire song about gay acceptance (which can be applied to a wider group of people but was admittedly, by her, intended to represent LGBT people in particular).

All these other ancient movie stars and broadway stars were in no way involved with LGBT movement. Judy Garland? Please, she died before gay people were even acknowledged as existing. They're just associated with the "bigger than life, in your face, take me or leave me bitch" kind of attitude that so unfortunately penetrates the gay community.

Perhaps we should pick icons and idols that actually care? That actually did things for the LGBT community? That are even part of our group (although that's not even necessary, just helpful to connect).

No one here mentioned Harvey Milk. No one here mentioned Bernie Sanders. These men have represented and helped LGBT people in government and actually helped us move forward. Even people like NPH and Ellen DeGeneres, who are celebrities for something other than being giant pompous divas. Why don't we care about them?

Honestly, I think the LGBT community as a whole needs to get its act together and figure out its priorities. The time where it was necessary to be in your face, to be crazy and out there, to be an exclusive community, is over. It's time to step out of the "character role" of crazy gay friend and into helping people realize that we are normal citizens just like them. We're like the rebellious teenager, trying to get everyone to pay attention to how crazy and anti-authority we are. Hell, plenty of us ARE rebellious teenagers and 20-somethings. Gaining acceptance for being homosexual, lesbian, transgender, etc, is great. Gaining acceptance for being crazy-ass diva bitches is not something that needs to be high on our priority list.

You are very very wrong about this. Maybe because the gays back then were more intelligent and analytical about the icons they choose.

Dear Em:
Somewhere over the rainbow, past searches on "Judy Garland gay icon" and related terms, we discovered a number of complicated reasons why this singer and movie star is so beloved by the gay community.

The gay and lesbian magazine The Advocate calls Judy Garland "an Elvis for homosexuals." In more closeted times, gays used the term "friend of Dorothy" to refer to themselves in mixed company, in homage to Garland's role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Today, Garland isn't as well known among the younger gay generation, but she still holds a special place in the hearts of many.

Judy Garland was hugely popular among gays during her lifetime. Her concerts were major gay meeting places, and in her later years, she made money singing at gay piano bars. Garland's father was gay, as were her studio-executive mentor and two of her five husbands. She had many gay friends and went to parties where she joked that she was the only woman present. But her appeal was based on more than her own acceptance of gays.

Both onscreen and off, Garland projected a unique combination of vulnerability and strength. She sang of intense loneliness, followed by songs describing delirious love. She had legendary stage fright but declared her greatest happiness came from performing. These conflicts mirrored the lives of oppressed, closeted gay men in the 1950s and 1960s. They identified with the paradox and duplicity in Garland's life. Severe laws and prejudice against homosexuality forced gays to lead double lives and hide their true selves.

As Dorothy, Judy Garland portrayed a misunderstood kid from a small town who has an amazing adventure in a Technicolor world. The central message of The Wizard of Oz is that you will find what you're looking for inside yourself. That message resonated with gays of the era who yearned to come out into a colorful world and live what was inside of them.

While prejudice against gays is still common, the public is generally more tolerant these days. Homosexuals aren't as strictly closeted as in Garland's day, and her image doesn't strike such a deep chord. But her plucky strength and sweetness continue to win admirers among people of all orientations.

Lady Gaga's songs and loud declarations of support are very easy to make now and get heard. And our generation isn't smart enough to recognize songs and performances of about lives if it didn't have the word "gay" in it.

I like Lady Gaga but calling her gay icon is pushing it. Too easy.

I have to say, I didn't know Judy Garland was quite so involved with gay rights, and she certainly is identifiable.

Nonetheless, anyone under the age of 50 or so has no real perspective on her and no real reason to identify with her, as she's out of their time. The reason I put up my argument is because that's how I've heard most people refer to and talk about their various gay idols. "She's fierce! She doesn't care what anyone thinks! She's really out there! No one's a bigger diva than her!" Even if that's not initially what spawned gay idolization, it's certainly what fuels most of it now.

The 1950's and 1960's were very different times for gays. They needed idols they could identify with because it was so hard to find other gay people or to come out. The 70's wave of gay-ness brought all that pent up sexuality out into the open, and everyone sort of went "fuck you all, I'm going to have sex everywhere and go streaking and do whatever the fuck I want because I'm gay and you all need to get used to it!" which was a somewhat reasonable attitude after centuries of oppression. However, 40 years later, we're getting to a point where that tactic just won't cut it anymore, and where we need to come into our own as an assimilated part of society. Just look at the various other civil rights movements; there was a black power rise in the 70's and 80's which declared the independence of blacks, but that has now boiled from a cultural revolution to a more practical effort to reduce poverty and lack of education in black communities. Women were burning bras for a while, and more recently they've come out of the "we are women and we're BETTER than men! We don't need them!" to "We are equal to men and we can do everything they do" kind of opinion.

Gay culture, similarly, needs to grow up and find a new "theme". It's not the 1970's anymore.

Edit: By the way, in doing some research I came across this quote:

Garland was (and still is) a gay icon; she always had a large base of fans in the gay community. During a press conference in San Francisco in the 1960s, a reporter asked Garland if she was aware of her loyal gay following. "I couldn't care less," she said. "I sing to people."

Probably because in your shit hol country where people to many of them believe in some fantasy called Jesus that these good people many fo who happen to be women who are more together than people like you appreciate gay people and the good things manty contribute to society. If there evcer was a Jesus he was a fag no jewish man 2000 years ago would be alive if not married at 33 the whole thing is a myth and America is one of the most dispicable countries on earth.

Did Gaga ever admit she's Bisexual or is that just a Rumor?

The reason Mr. Milk isn't considered a Gay Icon is pretty simple; he's a gay HERO.

Bitter much?

I worship the way Gaga uses those big-ass shoes to stomp on those who have crossed her. That's all.
