I always thought girls did it just because they wanted to be taller than they really were.
I doubt people will actually wear high heels that are too high in public, but I don't doubt some people will do it. Designers probably makes those shoes to break boundaries or something
 
Because standing on your tiptoes is fun.

And they do wear them to make themselves taller than they really are. Has a lot to do with being on the same "level" as men.

High heels developed from women's dresses reaching all the way to the floor. Since the roads back then weren't much of anything like they are today, traveling in public was often a messy affair. The solution was to put the woman in a pair of shoes that elevated her entire self above the street level and thus save her expensive dress from being ruined by the mud.

This. Especially when the girl is short and wants to practice her sexy walking style.

But yes, the price of fame is expensive. Bad balance particularly on rough-surfaced places, it hurts a lot, and it does damages to the toes. Then again, girls would starve themselves to death to look pretty, so who cares.
 
25 years ago, in a gender studies class, my tutor pointed out that wearing high heels makes a woman's foot point with the toes curled up and the calves contract, which is what happens when she has sex. So, the idea is that it is part of an over all strategy to make a woman appear sexually available, combined with make-up that makes a woman's eyes appear large and fully opened, flushed looking cheeks, swollen lips, and an ensemble that accentuates her sexuality too. Makes sense. I have to say that if I see a cute guy who makes an effort to look sexually available, he's got my vote - regardless where or how appropriate.

And we shouldn't forget the psychoanalytical reading of shoes - although it's not fair to claim that interpretation for the psychoanalists, since it goes back at least as far as Perrault with his version of Cinderella with her fur lined slippers, revisited with Anderson and many others.
