Why do men have nipples?

Is this an artifact from early times where men actually breast-fed or were the nipples used for other purposes like sexual stimulation or to increase hormones? Of course some would argue they are a great thing for those who are hard wired get instant powerful boners just by rubbing them. Others would say they are just plain ugly and useless adding nothing unless adorned with a ring etc.

A female has XX chromosome. A male has XY chromosomes. Nipples are from the X chromosome (the female strand of chromosome).

apparently my basic understanding is, we are all female but during the development in the womb some turns into male. Therefore the nipple stays but won't developed into breasts. ( bad bad writing LOL )
