Why do some gay guys carry "bags"?

i love my "Murse" hehehe...i put all my social concious rasing buttons on it...and i put my art book...and my pens and pencils...and my iPod...and cellphone...and eyedrops...and money (sometimes) and anything i purchase...yay for murses!
 
I actually have a tote bag that I carry around work stuff in. But it's got a punk band's logo emblazoned on the front - does that make it less "gay"? :)

How much you would spend on one----I am very cheap and just laugh when I hear what that women will spend on a hand bag.
 
I carry a shoulder bag, and I've never gotten any comments about it here in L.A., except "Where did you get that - I want one of those." I think I got my last one at the Army-Navy Surplus store, and so I guess it's pretty butch. In it, I have my wallet (which I got at the women's department at Barney's because only women's wallets have coin compartments), glasses, allergy medicine, business cards, pens, folding hair brush, keys, cell phone (in special compartment), lip balm with sunscreen, and various receipts that I happen to get. I hang my bag on the wall in the laundry room when I get home, and so I always know where keys and other essential things are before I go out. I've been carrying a shoulder bag of one sort or another since 1989 and only got criticized for it in backward parts of Texas.

Once I went into A Different Light bookstore in WeHo, and the lesbians at the counter told me I would have to check my bag. I said very loudly to them, "It's not a bag, it's a PURSE," and they left me alone. They weren't asking women to check their purses. That's really the only problem I've had with it.

I carry one becaue I have a 20 minute subway commute to work. I usually spend up to 14 hours downtown. I keep a book (for that 20 minute subway commute), my phone, my mp3 player, usually a pack of gum or mints, my wallet and check book and calendar in my bag. Since I don't own a car, there is really no other place to keep these things as I'm going about my day (did I just say "going about my day"?).

Pretty much everyone I know in NYC (gay, straight or other) carries some sort of bag, backpack or briefcase.

I always carry mine, only its in my boxers.
It is is HUGE. But I keep it out of sight. :confused:
So you are open minded? Are you accepting of differences?
 
I've got a shoulder bag, mostly for uni stuffs, but I use it sometimes if I've just got other stuff to carry around. If I go shopping, I'll often stick my shopping in there.
 
I think a 'murse' - male purse is so so so gay. I think its good to use if u are on holiday, in fact, i have seen people wearing them on holiday, but i dont see the reason to wear one when one is out at the mall, or just walking on the street. I have pockets on my jeans/trousers that can hold everything i need. Thats keys, cellphone, and my wallet. I dont bring my comb, hairgel, eau-du-toilette and other what nots into a bag to bring with as i dont see myself ever using that when im out.
I mean why a comb? is ur hair going to be blown funny when you are out? To me, there is simply no point in bringing these excess items
 
I agree - it is an American thing. We get a lot of European tourists in my neighborhood, and most of the men carry some sort of shoulder bag. The straight Italian men tend to be the best dressed - we'll be getting a lot more of those next month. I also agree that NYC and L.A. are exceptions, although there could be other progressive cities. However, in San Francisco, you would not want to carry a man bag into a bar - queens there still have a lot of hang-ups.

I've noticed also that European men walk differently from American men. I've frequently mistaken them for gay.

Should men really care if something is labelled as "gay"? I think gay guys are responsible for labelling things as "gay" too. For example, on "Will & Grace", I heard the character, Will Truman, say that a guy was gay because he was wearing Prada shoes. Sorry, but a couple of my straight friends own more Prada and Gucci shoes & boots than I do. One of my straight friends has over 50 pairs of designer shoes & boots.

Is labelling more of an American thing? I've lived in Europe before, and my impression is that most people don't give a damn about what brand of shoes or type of bag you're carrying. Two straight guys can go to the cinema together in Europe without being viewed as a gay couple as well. In some parts of Europe, you may even see straight guys dancing together (not slow dancing though), but you have to pair with a female to dance in the U.S.

IMO, American men have just as many or more insecurities about their sexuality and penises than any men in the world. LOL I can say that because I'm an American man, and I have a basis of comparison. Maybe some American men should be more concerned with getting in shape and trimming some fat off of their asses as opposed to looking at other men and labelling them based on what type of bag or brand of shoes they wear, etc. :badgrin:

Ah, so that's where the game "Gay or European" came from. It's a fun game, my friends and I play it all the time.

But anyway, I have a messenger bag to accommodate my mood. Sometimes you just wanna read, or listen to musik, or play your DS...Ya never know these days.
 
I can't even begin to tell you how convenient my "fag bag," as I like to call it, is. I keep a jacket in it at all times, an umbrella, sudafed, excedrin, a pencil, my phone, a book, several packs of gum, my keys, my sunglasses, my wallet, three decks of playing cards, a mini sewing kit, cough drops, a pen, my inhaler, my checkbook...

I actually think there's more, but I can't think of it off the top of my head. Those things I just listed are just the things I keep in it ALL the time. If I need something else specific, there's always room.

I noticed (when I lived in SF) that it was full of guys from the Midwest who dressed like clones, had little personality, and were not interested in anything that deviated from a very narrow "norm" - "straight acting" as you might say. Of course then there were the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (shown at a pool party in L.A.) who tried to reverse that trend. I found the majority of the gay population in SF to be more conservative than L.A., although SF has more of the extreme nonconformists than we do, but they're a distinct minority. I know because I was part of that minority when I lived there.

BTW, I liked the effeminate Euro guys - they weren't that effeminate--they just walked with a slight swish. I thought it was cute. I don't like overly butch men - they seem to be less in touch with their feelings. If they are butch AND sensitive, then I'm fine with that, and that's an unbeatable combination.

Does "Westwood" refer to the neighborhood next to Brentwood?
 
I have to carry a little bag with me everywhere because I have too much stuff to fit in my pockets.... cigarettes, lighter, wallet, phone, mp3 player... they all can fit in my pocket but bulging pockets don't look good.
 
How like to keep all my stuff together, I cannot carry all of it. I have my glasses, sunglasses, cell phone, pills, breath mints, ipod, sometimes a magazine for reading. I have a few bally bags but my most reliable is my old banana republic flat bag.
