Why do the poor spend so much money on Xmas?

Generally, the reason the poor are poor is because of the way they waste the money they do have. One must be willing to do without for a while for the prospect of a better life.

for the other 11 months of the year, these people don't have two pennies to rub together (until giro day), but come December they turn into Donald fucking Trump and they spend money like it's going out of fashion.
They're saving throughout all the year for christmas

Everybody knows that the more desperate and poorer you are, the more you believe in hope and god. The more you donate to him, the higher the chance to land in heaven ..|

That's why I have a tiny problem with television appeals (Children in Need, Comic Relief etc.), apart from it being a terrible night of television "entertainment", it does encourage the second lowest social groups to donate money to the lowest group.

The worst words that can ever be uttered on British Television are: "Now lets go live to the fundraising events in your area".

Who would deny the poor their pleasures?

I think this is a fair question.

Some christmas presents will be for the bin after christmas.

Makes me think of this:

I was on the brink of tears the first time I heard it because of how true it rang for me...

Benefit whores, the lot of them.

There's a difference between those that are on benefits that have no choice and those that steal them. But that doesn't mean that all of them, or even a majority, should be shot...

Besides, what's wrong with celebrating a holiday? And why do need to be from a particular income bracket to do so?

Because people are
a) pressured into christmas by commercialism
b) they want to spend at least one day of the year where they can see people smile

I know what it's like to have nothing for Christmas, and to spend every last penny I own to see the smiles on the kids faces and getting warm hugs from family for putting in the effort.

this is the fundamental truth.....

multiply or divide by the person's particular circumstance, and.....voila....bankruptcy...,in order to be a part of the event....

bless you, sexylad...for keeping to the real meaning of Christmas ...IMHO

what would be more helpful:

suggesting putting all the poor back into debtors prisons so they can live according to how they should live according to classic English economic theory --

or

remarking that the Prince of Wales gives the rest of us all we need to know about Wales and the Welsh

I'm poor, and I don't spend money on xmas. I draw a christmas tree on my cupboard, i play xmas music, I look for deals on reasonable presents for my immediate family, eat foods I traditionally ate with my family since always. I don't get christmas lights or those ridiculous hot air inflated santa/penguins to bump around on the front lawn because it's not a reasonable purchase for me. That's what I think the OP was talking about. Not that people don't deserve the freedom to choose how to spend their money or to want a happy holiday, he was asking why they are making such financially unwise decisions over purchases that are so unnecessary.

I think it's less about poor people wanting a little joy in their "bleak lives"*, and more about people who are bad with their money spending because there's an excuse to. "Should I buy this? eh it's Christmas. why not!" It's normal to spend extra money and people think of it as something everyone has to do, so much that they don't consider going through the holidays another way.

* about the "bleak lives" stuff... Just because someone's poor, doesn't mean their life is bleak and joyless. I mean mine is, but not EVERY poor person's is! lol

Christmas festivities have a well rehearsed habit of reminding us that fun is as much a right, for the poor as for the prosperous.

Mistletoe is an excellent party appetiser, for those who will make the effort to live a little.
