Why do people do this? Because, really, of body shame, both shame of being seen nude and shame at seeing someone else nude. If we weren't so phobic about nude bodies, none of the rest would matter; we'd understand that bodies are bodies, and what they're like is not our business nearly so much as it is theirs.

In a word: politics.

Conservative politicians do this to get votes, particularly because they also know that liberals will oppose them, which will gain even more votes. I'm sure that for years transgender people have been using the bathrooms that their appearance and attire suggests they use and barely anyone has noticed. This is hardly a problem that needed to be addressed in law. I assume it came to the notice of right-wing politicians when virtue-signaling left-wing politicians decided to codify custom.

How many people do you really think are going to change their gender marker 'just because they can' when there's this much shit to put up with?

I mean, it's not like it's an attractive offer. "Sure, you can change the marker; but if you don't pass (and you'll never pass in these days of Google & Gossip) then you'll just have to live with the various levels of fuckery we make it a point of putting you through". There's a hell of a lot more involved than a piece of paper, it wouldn't kill you to make one tiny bit simpler to process.

I agree. Bullies have to have someone they feel they're better than. They've always used marginalized people for this. No one would let them get away with using the groups they traditionally used. If I had my way your gender would be solely decided by what genitals you have. If you have a penis you are male.
To change gender you would have to have the surgery and all the attendant psychological councelling and hormone treatment that entails

^ I know two people (a couple) in this small town, actually, who have penises. I consider them fully to be women in EVERY other way...and I definitely don't feel uneasy or uncomfortable around them, in the least. Why should I?

The constitution and specifically the bill of rights protect the minorities from the majority. If the majority were to tell any minority that they could not publish a paper for their cause (as an example), the constitution protects the minority with freedom of the press and free speech.

Now, in answer to your problem of having a transgendered person with a penis share a woman's rest room with other women, this might be a shock, but there are no urinals in a woman's room. How will any one see them? Well, I guess that they might peek.
The locker room was not mentioned in my question. However, The last gym that I went to had gender neutral locker rooms as well as
men's and women's.

Also, have you given any thought to a boy having to share a men's room with a heterosexual male who is also a pedophile and likes boys? Most pedophiles are married men.

It would seem that danger lurks around every corner, but lets worry about a person who was born with a penis that knows that they are actually a female.
