The Republican candidate for President Obama's old Senate seat has admitted to inaccurately claiming he received the U.S. Navy's Intelligence Officer of the Year award for his service during NATO's conflict with Serbia in the late 1990s.

Rep. Mark Kirk, a Navy reservist who was elected to Congress in 2001, acknowledged the error in his official biography after The Washington Post began looking into whether he had received the prestigious award, which is given by top Navy officials to a single individual annually.

The Post's inquiries were sparked by complaints from a representative of state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, Kirk's Democratic opponent in the Illinois Senate race.

It's just bizarre how, in the age of the internet, people really think they can get away with such blatant lies about their military service. It's confusing how they think that they can say they got an award or served in Vietnam...

Seems the only one who was telling the truth about his military service was John Kerry and a bunch of broke, desperate ex-military people lied about THAT for him....

What really takes the cake here is that he lied about getting something so unique! If it were something they awarded, say, ten thousand a year, I can conceive of someone thinking it might get by, but to claim something issued only once a year?!

Maybe I could get by with claiming that I did meet the physical requirements and got into the Coast Guard and achieved the rank of commander.....

I can explain why they think they can get away with it.

However, as a former recipient of the U.S. Navy's "Intelligence Officer of the Year" Award, I am sworn to secrecy in these matters.

After the bitch fit that Justapixel through about the Blumenthal thing (lying about being in Vietnam), I'm wondering why he isn't in here making an equal stink.

Hey, at least you got to give him credit for being a Republican that actually was in the military. He and McCain and that's about it.

Rush Limbaugh, John Boehner, Roy Blunt, Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, Dick Cheney (in his own words, "had other priorities than military service"), Karl Rove, Dennis Hastert, Dick Armey, Tom DeLay ("So many minority youths had volunteered ... that there was literally no room for patriotic folks like myself."), John Ashcroft, Phil Gramm, Dan Quayle, Pat Buchanan, Ken Starr, Gary Bauer, Ted Nugent, Jeb Bush, Newt Gingrich did not serve.

I haven't heard anything about this guy. However, I really don't like liars. We don't need people like this guy and Blumenthal serving us in our government.

I say get rid of them no matter their political affiliation.

Just a long shot guess that I've heard --- Michelle Obama for the Senate in Illinois. Sounds a little far fetched, but.......

That's even more far fetched than the rumors of Jeb Bush 2012. Though, she stands a better chance of getting an Illinois Senate seat than he does of getting the presidency.

Now I think on it, after 2016 President Obama will be able to spend time with their children and maybe she could consider her own career...

Oh,that's easy.Because he's a partisan hack.Besides,when republicans lie,cheat and steal,it's ok.

Or in the alternate,he'll offer up the other traditional right wing defense that goes something like this..''There are dirtbags in both parties..''

There are dirtbags in both parties. Blumenthal is one and so is Kirk. Nothing difficult about that.

Some clarification. He did inaccurately claim that he received the award as an individual, and he admits that. However, his unit DID receive the award while he was a member of it. So, the award WAS received, it just wasn't received by him alone.

uh huh.

And Blumenthal did kinda say "I was in the military during Vietnam" without actually saying "I went to Vietnam and saw combat."

The point is that they're both grossly exaggerating their records at best.

Oh I'm not arguing with that. However, you did not include in your original post that the award WAS given to the unit he was a part of. It doesn't excuse his exaggeration, and no one is suggesting otherwise.

Its also interesting to note that, when asked about it, many voters here in Chicago care less about an exaggeration of this sort than they do about an exaggeration about serving at all. (a la Blumenthal)

“I wore the uniform in Vietnam and many came back to all kinds of disrespect.”

“We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam.”

“When we returned from Vietnam, I remember the taunts, the verbal and even physical abuse we encountered.”

You were doing fine exposing a douche bag, don't excuse another.

Not excusing any. My point is that they tried to split hairs... Blumenthal could say "when I say we returned I meant ALL AMERICA" or some crap like that. Both did a pretty bad job of lying.

And man... you'd think they'd remember the internet isn't JUST for porn.

Meh. I'm still trying to figure out why I'm supposed to care about that Sestak thing.

It's very, very important Jasun.Very important. As our republican freinds point out, it's all about rule of law.And as we know through their teachings and their many examples,if there's one thing they care about ,it's making sure everything is on the up and up..

Either that, or they are trying to distract the country with yet another bullshit scandal. You know, because with everything the country is facing, this is what most Americans care about..Joe Sestak, what did he know, and when did he know it?..Blah,blah,blah..

Well let's not forget that it's the Republicans who "support the constitution."

Except where they don't like it and want to have amendments to it.

And we all know that Sarah Palin was offered as much money as anyone could scrape together to keep her from running. She'd be a shoe-in for the nomination and she'd lose the general election and take half the party with her (which seems to be happening right now, too).

Seriously... if Republicans really gave a shit about the "rule of law" there would be no Patriot act, no Guantanamo Bay, no spying on American citizens, no foot-tapping Senators...
