Why Do We Hate?

There's another kind of hatred. And I think it's probably the kind of hatred that's most relevant to homophobia. Self-hatred. That is those parts of one's self that he hates, denies and represses. He hates nothing more than the fact that he is something he hates and has no control over it. So when he sees this in another person, his first instinct is to prove to the world that he isn't what he is. In the tangled web of irrationalities that make up emotions like hate, it makes perfect sense to him that if he can just prove he hates gay people, he isn't gay.

I would point back to what I quoted earlier from the article:

There is no simple answer to why people hate, Mohr said. Hate can be sparked by greed, or fear, or a tribe bonding together in opposition to another. People looking to belong will hate others to fit into a group, he said.

Fear of being cast out, shunned by the heterosexual group makes them display hate for homosexuals. If he can just prove he hates homosexuals, no one in the heterosexual group will think he is one, and his place will be safe.

His method of deception (homophobic behavior) gives him away. "He doth protest too much". Gays don't even have to be present for this display to happen, since it's for the benefit of the heterosexual group he belongs to.
