There's another kind of hatred. And I think it's probably the kind of hatred that's most relevant to homophobia. Self-hatred. That is those parts of one's self that he hates, denies and represses. He hates nothing more than the fact that he is something he hates and has no control over it. So when he sees this in another person, his first instinct is to prove to the world that he isn't what he is. In the tangled web of irrationalities that make up emotions like hate, it makes perfect sense to him that if he can just prove he hates gay people, he isn't gay.
