browsing goodreads for rent-boy/hooker/bdsm gay stories, I found that most of the books published are written by women (not men hiding under female names!) and reviewed by women.
How can that be? Even searching for "rent boy memoirs" I got back books by women. what the heck?
 
Its a phenomenon that been observed for years though noone can really say why. It just seems that many women are as turned on by the idea of two men having sex as men are by two women.

Why do men write straight female stories?
 
They can write whatever they want, although personally, I'd much rather be reading stories from gay men, who know all about gay erotica from personal experience.
 
It is the same reason gay male storylines on soaps are popular with straight women it feeds a fantasy. But it is a heteronormative mostly and in some ways homophobic. The gay couples on TV always got a kid or the gay guy sleeps with a woman and gets her pregnant. Too many soaps to count do this. In term of books the storylines gay men will not enjoy at all. It is a weird industry that has nothing to do with a gay male point of view. I AVOID reading books written by women about gay men because often they get it wrong. The funny thing is many women are very sexist about men writing about women.

Straight men watch Lesbian porn, and porn producers actually have them in mind as a target group. Why should things not be the other way around? I just know that, among fandoms, fanfiction writing is considered a girl's thing, so if they buy into a gay ship, it makes sense that they would write about them.
 
Because some women love dude on dude action, my mom is one of them, sometimes we watch Gay porn together. I also had a fag hag back in 8th grade who was a yaoi fangirl, she loved reading Gay love stories, and even wrote a couple.

Actually very few male writers write about women. And when male writers DO right about women they are usually criticized by some angry feminist usually a lesbian. Nicolas Sparks is the exception to the rule he is one of the few male writers who actually made millions writing about and for women. Usually when men do right about women some angry feminist complains about it. John Irving for example is consistently criticized by angry feminists because in his books the women tend to be evil and the villain. Some angry feminist usually says he is a misogynist. So women cannot be sinister and evil? Give me a break.

The OP is not disputing that point maybe you need reading comprehension skills. The OP point is why? And I think gay men SHOULD be questioning it. I really laugh at those gay men who are STUPID ENOUGH to think straight women are automatic allies of gay men. Some of the most homophobic and bigoted people out there in society are straight females. If you bothered to read some of these women who write about gay men they often get it wrong. And their writing is often extremely offensive and heteronormative.

I've always admired the Bene Gesserit of the DUNE novels but realize their amazing strengths, talents and flaws come from the mind of Frank Herbert. But when I read Brokeback Mountain and there was this bit in there about one of the characters peeing in the mini kitchen sink of his small trailer and then, I think, drinking stale coffee there I thought, "...wait a minute". Even for a conflicted straight/bi or whatever cowboy that's a bit much lady. I never saw the film have really no interest to. Not just because of that one scene it just never appealed to me. Man or woman can write human but there comes a point when you know they're stretching it.
 
I think it's an interesting phenomenon. When Queer as Folk was on TV more women watched it than gay men. Some people claimed it was because there are more straight women than they are gay men. But I think it's same reason straight men like lesbian porn.
 
I know a man who has written several M/M novels, and he says that soccer moms are among his biggest fans.
