To help people feel "festive" ?

To help people deal with their family members ?

To help mask the pain of memories when Christmas was better ?

All of the above ?

I dunno. I mention this only because *I* was at my local liquor store tonight, and the place was packed. Lines practically out the door, and this is a huge store with six registers and shopping carts and endless aisles of booze.

I overheard one of the employees telling the guy in front of me that it would be like this until the first of the year.

If the holidays are such a "magical" time, why does everyone have to get shit-faced to get through them ?

Thoughts ?

Do you really need a reason to drink alcohol?

After being sober for 10 years I can tell you from experience that the Holidays are far better without alcohol fucking everything up.

You should try it sometime.

There are many people who only drink during the holidays since it is so festive. It gives them a reason to do something they normally would not do. There are just as many who want to numb themselves from the pain the season brings. Alcohol is the only way to get the warm fuzzies in a world otherwise cold and dull.

Well parties and liquor go hand in hand since the dawn of history (I mean even Zeus had his boy-toy to bring him drinks!)
And lets face it - there aren't that many parties in a year where you can jingle elegantly with crystal champagne glasses AND get shit-faced with shooters all in one evening! :p

It's a funny thing about the alcohol commercials. There are less and less beer commercials (fun in the sun!!) and more and more hard liquor commercials (for auld lang syne).

Just remember to, um

what was the question

nevermind

quelle heure est-il?

Andy Roddick is HOT!

I suppose for the same reasons alcohol is common at parties during any other time of the year.

Most of the people who abuse alcohol during the last week in December do so the other 51 weeks of the year as well. They're called alcoholics. Much of what you sugested are just excuses to get drunk.

Most of us drink responsibly.

Alcohol has been associated with Yuletide, as well as every other cultural celebration, for millenia.

Let me tell you my story. One Christmas Eve, in the late afternoon I realized I was out of wine. I figure I'd go to the liquor emporium, before they closed, and pick up a bottle or two. I figured the place would be empty because it was already pitch black dark out and a winter storm was in progress. Chile I got there and the line was out the doors. People coming from far and wide; off-duty cops directing traffic into the parking lot, and folks in there buying mad liquor by the shopping cart. I learned then that people love to be tipsy under the tinsel. I guess it just feels more like Christmas that way.

I wonder if, historically, it has anything to do with winter depression and/or the freezing temperatures. Drinking makes you feel good, so depressed people do it even though it can actually make things worse. Drinking also makes you warm, even though it doesn't actually, but it sure makes you feel it.

I'm gonna chalk up the "family" reason. Sadly, it is the only thing my family can actually bond over without some vile tongue speak or physical abuse.

I would hazard a guess, but I put way too much rum in that last glass of egg nog and now I'm going to go sleep it off.

Your "all of the above" answers it best.

And, as stated above, there are a LOT of parties this time of year, and they need the "social lubrication" of booze.

One other thing. Alcohol makes a great gift, being a consumable that doesn't collect dust or sit around unused after the holidays. That explains some of the manic buying.

Hm weird .. while there is alcohol being drunk here during the christmas holidays ... it's not really a drinking time. New Years eve is .. but Christmas? I will have a few glasses of wine with my parents, and that probably will be about it ..

^^When I was a child in the 1950s, there was very little drinking before and during the Christmas season, except for, perhaps, a Christmas party at work on December 23 or 24 and, of course, New Year's Eve.

People might have a drink or two during Christmas week, if company (usually family or near neighbors) showed up to "see your tree", as we used to say.

But in the last 20 - 25 years it seems like the number of drinking parties has increased exponentially. Some people go to 10 - 15 Christmas parties between Thanksgiving and New Year's. Most people I know throw one.

Still, though, most people seem to drink responsibly. I imagine the recent strictness about drinking and driving keeps most people, other than the alcoholics, sober.
