Why Do You Suppose Alcohol is Such a Big Part of the Holidays ?

In my family it's to unwind, loosen up, and not tear your family members to shreds ;)

Mammals in general like booze. When fruit falls off a tree in nature, animals won't touch it until the juices have had some time to ferment a bit. For some reason it's hardwired into mammalian DNA to enjoy booze.

Add in the social aspects of human society and you get all kinds of reasons under the sun. It's social lubricant in a holiday where you may not really like the relatives you're forced to deal with (alternatively, it makes an already fun time seem even more fun), or liquid courage during a holiday where crowded malls require decisive action to get in and out with your purchases intact.

After being sober for 10 years I can tell you from experience that the Holidays are far better without alcohol fucking everything up.

You should try it sometime.

alcohol only "fucks everything up" if the people involved have a problem with it.

the only thing more judgemental than an ex drinker is an ex smoker.

I cut way back on drinking, but in the day i looked forward to drinking around christmas & new years, just because of the stress that i endured all year long
i still have an occasional bottle of wine every so often

I'm not sure everyone is getting entirely shit-faced - if you're having say 20 people over for Christmas lunch/dinner, you need 20x the usual amount of alcohol you might consume if you were alone, right?

I think it just SEEMS like more than it is.

Having said that, I did my booze shopping yesterday. The place was quiet, far quieter then than it is on even a typical Saturday morning, le alone 4 days before Christmas. I suspect it will be crazy next week in the run-up to New Year, though.

I don't really drink more during the holidays than I do during the year. (and no, that doesn't mean I get shitfaced daily)

I drink no more, or less, just because some of you zealots think this is a special time.

I drink alcohol because it's bad for my health^^

I'm going to guess is that it's because it's more widely available.

Poeple buy it for a "special occasion,", friends/family come over and think" Woo. Free alcohol," and drink.

I usually drink less during the holidays since I spend more time with family and none of them stock up on alcohol.
