Just wondering about this, as I've wanted one of these cars since I first started driving back in 2000. I'm now at that point in my life where I can afford one as a toy, specifically a 1998-2005 "NB" model, of course with the clutch pedal. Color and condition is more important than specific model type, options, etc. I'd take a base model over a loaded one if it were in nicer condition. About the only options I care about are the ones that affect the driving experience, like ABS brakes, limited slip diff, bigger wheels/tires, etc.

Anyways, why does this car get a bad rap about being an effiminet gay man's car???? The handling is simply sublime, I can't think of another car that drives this direct for any price IMO.

Plus if I were to buy a basic "NA" 1st gen model, I'd rather have one without power steering or a/c, crank windows, etc, just more basic and lighter.

Granted these cars aren't fast in a straight line stock, but that isn't the point, the sublime handling, the fact that you can actually push this car near its limit on a public road without going to jail or killing yourself is the main appeal IMO

Because it was a chick car.

So any guy that has one is immediately branded as gay.

Get a Z4... That's a manly mans car...and it's a convertible too!

The Miata isn't considered a gay car. They at times can be considered a geriatric car due to the number of senior men who get them and fix them up.

But, in general, you see men and women driving Miatas. You're just listening to idle chatter among some snide folks most likely.

The base version actually looks a bit girly, but you could change some parts like the front grid and the wheels to make it more sporty and aggressive.

This one for example is cool enough (excluding the writings).

In my area it seems to be driven by middle aged baby boomers. About an equal parts men and women.

I've always like this car. My cousin had a 1972 MGB that I loved. Always seem to have something wrong with it. I've heard the Mita called a British style roadster that actually can be counted on to run.

They are one of the great driver's cars. I had a '94 and it was amazing to drive, it sounded great & was incredibly well made & reliable. You can upgrade them if you want more power, but blistering performance is not it's purpose. But since it was so small, it always felt like you were going faster than you were, especially with the top down. I did hear some sarcastic comments about it being girls car or hairdresser's car, but I don't care. Cars are meant to be enjoyed by the driver. My uncle who is crazy about muscle cars used to give me shit about it, so I gave him the keys so could run to the store quickly. He came back 3 hours later smiling.

I had one a few years back, about 20 years old, and had it repainted before I started driving it. Was just a temporary car as I had given away my every day driver to a friend in need.

The Miata was fun-ish, but not great with the top on and too much bother to take the hard top off. Worse yet for me, it was so low set it literally gave me sciatica which ruined a trip to Colorado I made to hike with friends. I soon gave away the car to another friend in need and he loves it till yet.

It was also no good for a road trip as it was so damned small that I would never dare drive it cross country on the interstates with all the SUVs and big trucks. In collision or accident, there would be no surviving.

Qud erat demonstrandum.

Quod erat demonstrandum.
oops

It saddens me to think that even Italians no longer learn basic Latin.:p

Q.E.D. (also written QED) is an initialism of the Latin phrase quod erat demonstrandum, meaning "what was to be demonstrated", or, less formally, "thus it has been demonstrated".

@rare: "Come volevasi dimostrare" in italian. Latin wasn't a subject at my school but my brother did study it, he had this huge dictionary that we had to sell lol. I believe they still teach Latin and Greek here anyway.

Case in point for the cheap seats. And back to Aaron's OP, more proof that catty bitchy comments are just putdowns of idle gossips.

Think about it. Someone buys a car, obviously enjoys driving it, and then someone else makes some assessment about its inadequacy as a macho symbol, with the implicit message that a car needs to be masculine for a male driver. Isn't that the very definition of killjoy?

Maybe the greater problem is a man who would let his enjoyment of a car be marred by some misery monger somewhere sitting on the sidelines making deprecatory observations.

Check out the new fiat spyder. It is made at the same factory as the Miata and I think looks far better.
