Why does my dog eat poop?

This is so totally disgusting

I have 2 Dachshund's and both of them on occasion will eat their own crap. And I don't know why.

Does anyone else have dogs that do this? And what's the theory behind this, why do they do it? They're on one of the best dog foods there is (I don't buy that junk from the grocery store) and they get occasional treats, but I can't let them overeat because Dachshund's put on weight very easily (both of mine are tweenies) so they're on limited amounts, they only get a total of one cup of food per day each, spaced out into 2 meals.

Are they that hungry????

Why do men lick assholes? Because we can. Same with your puppy.

"Veterinarians can supply a substance that can be added to a dog’s food that makes the feces distasteful."

ROFLMAO!

As opposed to the normally tasty morsels they squeeze out??

My dog did it once (that I know of) when he was a pup. He has been known to go digging for golden nuggets in the next-door's cat box. Has made him an unwelcome guest.!oops!

The mother of my dog ate her puppies' sh*t for a while after their birth. The vet told me that the mother's milk goes through the puppies so quickly that there's still a lot of nutrition in it that the mother needs.

Yes, that's normal :)

Don't know why they choose to do it later in life, though.

lol

ewwwww this is gross, but anyway .....

I've seen dogs eat human poop but never their own. I once had to do a poo when I was out in the bush walking my dog, and while I was pulling my pants back up my dog pounced on the poop and ate it all up! Saved me having to bury it, anyway! ;)

Oh god, lol.

Dogs are strange creatures. They make no sense to me at all.

I didn't thoroughly read this entire topic, so forgive me if this was covered!

Dogs have instincts, like everyone else. Sometimes when animals smell other animals, usually possible predators, the Alpha animal may take charge and eat the feces of his or her following animals in order to protect them (no scent or trace of them, no danger? get it?) Pet psychology is quite unusual, but understandable.
