why does not wanting a relationship make you a bad person?

The simple question has a simple answer.
Not wanting to be in a commited relationship does not make any one a bad person?

And being in a commited relationship does not make any one a good person.

When you are intending to build a long term relationship, I believe that conversation might occur in the second or third date, if things are going well. Unless you are determined to avoid such relationships, then make your intention known as soon as possible.

I couldn't agree more, Introspective. I've had more rewarding relationships with a potted plant than a b/f de jour.

If the purpose of a relationship is to learn more about yourself, the way you operate, and what it means to be alive, then I don't see that sexual relations are the only means to that end. You can learn as much from a nightclass in macrame or a family Xmas - what matters is the degree of focus or attention you bring to the task at hand.

It's probably true that you get more bang for your emotional buck from a 'relationship' - that is to say, relationships are like sewers, the shit rises to the top. You can either acknowledge it and deal with it or you can push it under and judging from the hit-rate for failed relationships that's what most choose to do. Personally, I can do without the anguish.

The societal pressure that dictates that you're nothing if you're not partnered is simply thye marriage of consumerism and conformity - 'misery loves company'.
