Why does The First Spouse get a Staff?

Why? It kind of gives the wife of the president absolutely nothing to do.

You do vote for the Vice President. When you vote for the president, you are voting for the person they pick. If you don't agree with the guy they picked, then don't vote for the front runner.

Kind of what happened to McCain when he picked Palin.

Also as someone has already mentioned in this thread. When you vote for the president, you also vote for their wife.

The Sec of State is a cabinet position and they answer to the president, not the people.

So why not give us information on their spouse?

Why would it give the spouse nothing to do?

Also the president is suppose to answer to the people, so anyone that answers to them also would answer to the people.

The media gives you all the information on the spouse during the primaries and the election. If you somehow missed all the information on Michelle, you only have yourself to blame. Hell, there was even a controversy on something she said in a speech once.

Because if your electing a First Spouse, then what does the wife of the President have to do? If you suggest we should elect their actual wife, that is just stupid.

The Sec of State gets their direction and orders directly from the president. They act on behalf of the president. Why would we elect this person when their job is to do what the president tells them?

I will say it again, I am not talking about electing a staff or the actual wife. We vote on a president and their choice for VP, so why can’t we vote on their choice of spouse? They all come together. Also right now they are not even an employee.

As for info on Michelle during the primaries and the election, I want real info. Not tidbits. Not what the media think will sell, but what we should know.

Then media did give you what you should know. They gave you her whole background, what type of mother she is, her job history, etc. I mean what else do you want to know? They give you all the information on a first lady, it is your job to look through it and see if you like.

And why are you under the impression you don't vote for the first lady? If you don't like their wife, then don't vote for the man. Seems kind of simple. Just the same as when you don't like a VP, don't vote for the president attached.

How exactly else do you vote for a first lady without choosing who they are allowed to marry if they want to be elected?

They give tidbits unless you watch or read the news all of the time.

We don't vote for their spouse, they just do stuff when their husband gets the job.

Do you really think most people understand all the spouse gets to control? Most of the peole I have talked too only thought they got a few people on staff, not one that can rival a CEO.

As to your last question, by having official info for people to read. Not what Fox News or CNN wants us to know.

The direction of the conversation has taken off into the direction of idiocy. Voting on the First Lady? They have a staff because they have domestic duties for which they are not paid, conduct pet projects to enhance the administration, and play a part as representative of the United States abroad.

I like to think it pretty much started in idiocy, but I am glad you decided to join.

As for the rest of what you wrote, I already said my first choice would be to make them an employee just like the VP.

Also it nice we can give the administration good PR.

I don't think the First Lady should have a PERSONAL staff. There should be someone in charge of protocol that handles all visits/dinners with foreign leaders and of course a staff to maintain the White House. Cooks should only be brought in for state dinners and that is it. I don't know how it works at the moment but I think the President and the First Lady should pay for their own food, clothes, hair and makeup and all the other bullshit that doesn't have to do with the President's job. Shit, I would even charge them rent for living in the White House.

They pay for their own food out of pocket the only time we pick up the tab is at offical White House functions such as state dinners

But they aren't an employee, the Constitution provides them no power or paycheck.

Well, that assumes that there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Thats why "we" would make them a employee.

As for PR; they spin it tell its good.:D

I would hope all people know the First Lady gets a staff. I mean, they don't expect her to just sit on her ass and do nothing. She has to plan and entertain foreign diplomats and all other types of things. Not to mention First Lady's take up their own agenda's while their husbands are in office.

And you do vote for the First Lady. Would you really vote for a president if he had a trashy, lazy, controversial wife? She would be the downfall of his entire campaign if she was such a thing.

And first lady's are employee's of the government. They are responsible for showing a good image to foreign diplomats and taking up their own little projects to better America or the world, on behalf of the American people and the President.

The media is too busy covering celebrity scandals and deaths, who is sleeping with who, and other completely useless b.s. for the last few years to even make it credible. If a person watches the news channels on network tv or cable tv and only watch one channel to the exclusion of everything else they are not going to be any more informed because they will get a biasis opinion. The information is out there. I knew Jill Biden was a doctor very soon after Obama announced Joe Biden as president. I was curious enough to google the name. Hell, I knew Todd Palin was a member of a polictal party for several years Alaska that favored succession. Why because I was curious enough to google his name. I may spend an ungodly amount of time reading the news of the day, but it is a means to stay informed.

Did you bother watching news during the presidential election? It's all they covered pretty much the entire time.

If you want to watch celebrity news, there are special shows for that, and even they talked about the election.

I will say though. You get better news going online these days. But you do have to be careful at what sites you read and believe. Not all of them put out the truth.

The papers I read on a daily basis... The Seattle Times, The Tacoma Tribune, The Denver Post, the Amarillo Daily Globe, the Lubbock Avalanche Journal, The New York Times

I check CNN's, FoxNews, MSNBC, websited daily.

I read any number of blogs on a daily basis

I love the feauture on google up top where you click the news link and it brings up the link to the events of the day. They are not all from the same paper, and they offer suggestions to other stories on that event.

I check the offical websites of the Republican and Democratic parties and so on and so fourth.

I do not trust anyones information on anything unless I can independently verify it.

I spend an ungodly amount of time reading. I am a person that isn't satisfied with what is given to me on anything.

Seems to me that the point of many of the preceding posts is that we do in fact vote the the First Lady -- so we ought to get as much in-depth information about her as about the Veep candidate.

And that's not a bad idea at all. There's no way to go back to a First Lady who's merely the social host at the White House; the near-imperial nature of the presidency these days guarantees that the wife is an important member of the 'imperial court', so we ought to know a lot about her.

Would you really vote for a president if he had a trashy, lazy, controversial wife? She would be the downfall of his entire campaign if she was such a thing.

McCain's wife, Ford's Wife etc.

McCain's wife wasn't trashy, just honest.

No idea about Ford's wife. But he wasn't elected into office. He was originally Nixons VP right?

I was talking about their drug problems. I doubt most knew about McCain’s wife and what happened to Ford just shows that we should know “more” about the spouses, and not just the talking points.

VP's wifes aren't as important as a presidents wife. Seeing how it is kinda rare for a president to die, the wife of a VP is kind of none important.

And really, you have the internet now. If you want to make an informed decision on a president and his wife, google it.

The old Mrs. McCain seemed to have reformed and cleaned up nicely. What was wrong with her?

That’s not the point. They get their pet projects as well, if they choose too.

Your argument of “googling” it doesn’t cut it. If people are not reporting it, looking for it on line is not going to be much good unless it is a biased blogger.

McCain's current wife was a pill popper. It just that she is rich so it is okay.

Hey, if you want to learn something, google it.

If you don't like that method, then watch the news and except what info they give you.

Yes because google is the know all.

I prefer not to believe everything I see.

It not about just getting information, its about getting the correct information.
