Why is Borat so popular?

I'm looking forward to Bruno. I think it's going to be more controversial than Borat. Just watch some clips on his website, you'll see the homophobes reactions.

Surely the point of Borat is that the character is crass, offensive, ignorant, bigotted and intellectually backward. The joke is the number of people who go along with his bigotry and ignorance. Borat scrapes away the thin veneer which hides the prejudices of his "victims". There is a great bit of Borat, not from the film but a previous show where he sings a song in a country & western bar which is grossly anti-semitic but has the audience singing and clapping along enthusiatically

Where I think Borat fails is that it is sometimes hard to tell if people are goinig along with his prejudices to be polite (sort of like when people don't challenge their slightly racist Grandma because, what's the point, she isn't going to change and she'll be dead soon anyway, bless), because they agree or because they are just a bit dumb.

I love Borat, he's one of my fav character followed by Bruno.

he is very liberal and he hates stupid people and he pretends to be one of them so he can make fun of them. borat is the best
