Ok, so I just downloaded iphone os 4.2.1 with the promises of "17 new text alerts" (FINALLY) and I updated blah blah, I have the same boring alerts as ever.

What the fuck?

Someone figure it out and let me know.

thanks!

So, I googled that shit, and turns out that iPhone isn't a dick, it's Apple.

Apple is giving iPhone 4 users new alert tones but not anyone beneath them. Bastads. I WANTED to buy iPhone four but stupid AT&T wouldn't let me because I had just upgraded, and why? My iPhone that a paid a gillion dollars for BROKE when it fell like 3-4 feet onto concrete.

I'm annoyed.

iphone should let people copy and paste songs/images.

AMEN

Also, I can make custom ringtones, why the hell can't I make custom alerts???

Everyone that I know that has an iPhone has the tritone alert (everyone knows it) and I swear to god if you play that sound in a room with 50 people who all have iPhones EVERYONE will check their phone because A) it's the only bearable alert tone, and B) EVERYONE HAS TO USE IT!!

Damn you apple, give up the goods!

Trust me, you're not missing anything. The new alert tones SUCK. If you want to set your own (and apple doesn't make that a change in iOS 5), go to android or another platform. You can set anything you want as your alert tone.

wait ... you can't just use anything as an alert tone on iPhones  ?

oh .. welcome to 2005

It's true. If there's ever been a shining beacon of Apple's failure to add features, it's this one. There is no technical reason on Earth they can't enable true custom ringtones on every version of the hardware.

I emailed Steve Jobs about it last year, but he didn't answer me yet. :-)

I don't care - I want the opportunity to decice if they suck or not.

I'm starting to hate Apple. When I move to an area where I can choose any other carrier I'm ditching AT&T, and it looks like I'll be choosing Verizon.

Steve Jobs is a dick too - let's march on the apple headquarters and demand the ability to customize alert tones.

I'm SO over getting little hints of progress. I paid a shit ton for this phone, and i pay an ungodly amount per month to use it, GIVE ME FUCKING FEATURES!!

I can't believe people who are on verizon are excited to get this phone I guess this little fail doesn't really bother them. It doesn't bother me unless you jailbreak your iPhone and can use message tones but I heard they can only be 40 seconds long.

Wait... you own an iPhone... and you haven't jailbroken it yet...

What's wrong with you?

Drop anything electronic on to concrete from 3-4 feet and it most likely will break. There's no need to be so dramatic.

Having been on AT&T, I would take a Verizon iPhone in a heartbeat, even with this little fail intact.

The worst that I've ever had happen after jailbreaking was having to restore my phone. Totally worth it, though, as I now have no additional charge unlimited (yessss) tethering. That alone was enough to get me to jailbreak. Just make sure you back everything up before you do it, and you'll be fine.

Interesting.

So there's no way I could completely fuck my phone up and have to buy a new one? Worst comes to worst is I have to restore it?

There's always a risk you could permanently brick your phone. Its entirely possible.

THAT being said though, the tools for doing it are pretty much dead simple, so you should be able to do it quite easily.

+1

Never say never, but the chances of your phone being bricked are pretty low. The benefits from jailbreaking are well worth the risk, though.

So I researched it and came to the conclusion that I should NOT jailbreak my phone, because I've updated it past the 4.1 update, and a few sites said not to do it if you've gone past that point. Plus, I'm too scared I'll ruin it. I had to waste an upgrade once already because I broke one, I'll just wait until I can get iphone 4 or greater.
