I just want a simple parttime job and it feels like im running for president of the usa. I regret quitting my previous job and i wish i never did quit but trying to find a new job is like running for president. I get a few interviews i do everything right and they dont call back and the place(s) is still hiring. It feels like i went to jail for a murderer and no jobs wont consider me for employment. Home depot been hiring for over 6 months and they will put a ad up on the job websites back and fourth i called them and shes either not there or whatever. Maybe its just my stupid redneckish town or something its like everyone is getting started on there life and i just need a job to get started and i can go to school or something. Only jobs that will hire anyone is those stupid temp staffing jobs that has drug dealers and jail birds working there

Hopefully someone has some advice for me or something.

Sorry for the long post kids

Well as someone with much experience on both sides of the fence (hiring and looking for employment) I can tell you that most often there is a glut of applicants, most not qualified.

Also most of the time the hiring managers are looking for Unicorns. Unicorns are mythical creatures that don't exist-like the computer programmer with strong sales skills who will work for $9 per hour.

Just my tow cents worth. That and $3.98 will get you a cup of coffee.

I need a job, but I'm no good at getting one. Mind you, all I'm looking for is the little thing of working in a shop or somewhere. :)

Sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble finding work. If you know that you want to go to school and you know which school, go to that school's career center. They often have jobs posted for students at these centers. They may also be able to provide you advice on getting a job. As with everything else, you need to market yourself properly. Project yourself as the person that they would want to hire. ..|

It's been forever. I worked a part-time last year until May 07 and then finding a new one hasn't happened since now. At first all I was looking for were low-skill jobs like data entry and filing and apparently my vast experience in office work and data entry just wasn't enough to grant me an interview. Now all I look for is work that happens to be relevant to my desired graduate work and after volunteering with that place for months, I finally got a position there...8 hours a week.

Bah.

But it's a good thing I like the place and the work they do for homeless kids. I just have to find another part time position that will supplement the limited income of this job.

Interviews themselves are somewhat intimidating, but only if you let them be. I usually apply for jobs that I know I'm qualified for, over qualified for, or if under qualified, I know I have the skills to get through. If you just keep that attitude, then what you say and come across should be just as confident. You're an asset to THEM, they need YOU, and if they don't pick you, they're the ones missing out.

I hope well for all of those people trying to find not only a job, but something that you're happy with. Thankfully I'm self employed and it's been an exceedingly stable job - it reaches its thirtieth year (with no other income) in July.

Meanwhile, USEDCAR's mention of Home Depot quickly brought to mind the introduction to this cartoon, where the dog tries to get a job at Vic's, etc.

This won't actually help anybody get a job, but this little cartoon says it, OH so well. Nobody else has ever so well depicted how intimidating the interview process can be. It's always been one of my favorite cartoons of all time. Why did Canada produce so much cool animation and short films in recent decades? (Federal funding of the Arts there has probably resulted in some waste, but it's also resulted in a lot of precious and marvelous stuff as well.)
