You learned that in school? That is troubling indeed. The risk is considered very low, possibly even theoretical, but it is documented to have happened. The only time you are considered at risk is if you have an oral health complication (bleeding gums, a cut on your lip, etc.) and ejaculate is present. It is much safer than any other sort of unprotected sex, however oral sex on men is most certainly no risk by any stretch.

For the majority of men, unprotected oral sex without ejaculation in the mouth is considered an acceptable risk. While the risk would be lowered to nonexistent by using a condom, you will have to look far and wide for someone who will cover up for a blowjob. Getting cum in your mouth has not been officially deemed riskier than having him finish elsewhere, but it logically makes sense that it will heighten your risk.

As for me, I wish so bad that I could swallow. It is a fantasy of mine, and despite the health risk I may have to do it just once, but I am so paranoid of HIV I know I couldn't sleep at night. If I had proof my partner was negative, I would drink it down for sure. Swallowing is no more unsafe than sucking itself - if you have a cut/sore in your mouth, the risk of contracting HIV wouldn't be increased by swallowing. The acids in the stomach kill the virus. As far as other STDs go, by the time the dude has cum, you probably already have gonorhhea, so not swallowing won't save you.

Personally, I hardly ever swallow, but that's more to do with the taste.
